Directional Possession
Movement off the ball must now facilitate forward movement through zones 1, 2, and 3. Possession team start in zone 1 and must beat one defender to enter zone 2, where two defenders attempt to win the ball. If possession team progress to zone 3, defenders from zone 2 can follow them in. Against three defenders emphasise that movement off the ball must be quicker, more deliberate, and players must maximise their 1 player advantage with overlaps, underlaps, in 2v1 situations. Possession team wins by exiting through end line of zone 3.
Progress to playing offside in zone 3.

Situational
Build out play from goal keeper, emphasis on movements away from the ball to provide 4 options for ball player. Movements must be early, AS THE BALL MOVES BETWEEN GK AND DEFENDER. Extra emphasis on not waiting until the defender receives the ball, players move as the ball moves.
Our build out options are:
1 - Outside mid checking wide and deep
2 - Centre mid dropping deep
3 - Forward running into channel
4 - Off the ball defender checking centrally
The entire team is now working to find the opposite outside mid (A), in the space vacated by the opponent sliding to the ball.
If players understand the concepts quickly, discuss the second phase of movement after choosing 1,2,3, or 4.

Basic Possession (15 mins)
Basic Possession
Simple keep away drill varying number of defenders and emphasising the importance of movement off the ball. All players are numbered, when coach calls out their number they leave their own area and enter the opposite area to try and dispossess the other team. Focus on the possession players off the ball maximising the space available and constantly adjusting their passing angles as the defenders affect the areas accessible to the ball player.
