Awareness (30 mins)

A perceptive exercise used to force intensive learning (awareness) of passing, receiving and turning skills while working on marking and dismarking.

Set up a square or rectangle (15x15 up to 20x20) depending on numbers, with a center zone of 5x5. Distribute Jokers on the perimeter, along with balls (several fewer balls than players, ie perhaps 5 balls for 8 players as shown.) Use your judgement as to placement/coverage based on your numbers. Allow 2 or 3 players to remain inside the grid.

Action is as follows: upon coach's signal, Reds scan the area looking for an outside Joker with a ball, and receive a pass. Upon receving, they must return the ball to a different Joker who does not have a ball. Reds are free to play one touch to adjacent Jokers in the beginning (ignore inside zone).

Continue for 1-2 minutes of intense repetitions. When finished, swap out the inside players. Repeat until everyone has been inside.

Coaching points:

-Awareness (which Jokers have a ball, and which don't) before, during and after the receipt of a pass

-Receving player should orient body appropriately to suggest where he wants the pass. If he does not do so, the passer should help by passing to a certain foot or at a certain angle.

-Attacking player should use various methods to dismark, such approaching a Joker with a ball, but quickly changing direction to another before asking for a pass. Be creative and deceptive!

Progression 1:

-Players MUST dribble through center "zone" (outlined with 4 cones) before returning the ball to a Joker (adds chaos and eliminates easy one-touch play)

Progression 2:

-Add 2-3 Yellows, and pair each with a Red. Repeat activity, with Yellow acting as defenders (to start). Reds must focus on dismarking, receiving and playing to an outside Blue as before. If a Yellow steals/intercepts a ball, the attacking/defending roles of that pair immediately switch.

Continue as before, making sure everyone participates in all roles.

Directional Awareness (30 mins)

3v3+2

This exercise builds on the first one, and adds a directional component. Action is on a smaller (rectangular) grid, broken into thirds.Set up multiple grids to cover your full squad.

One Joker begins with the ball, while Red attempts to dismark, receive the ball, and play into the other Joker. If successful, play comes back the other way in the same fashion.

Play for 1-2 minutes, then switch Jokers and inside players.

Coaching Points:

awareness of who is open.

move into open space

talk about clearing out

TO AVOID THE ATTACKER DOING ONLY THE BARE MINIMUM TO RECEIVE AND PLAY, THEY MUST ADVANCE FROM THE SECTION THEY RECEIVE IN TO THE NEXT SECTION BEFORE THEY PLAY TO THE OTHER JOKER.

If Yellow successfully steals, roles immediately switch.

Coaching points:

-High intensity!!

-Quick, decisive movement: commit to shaking your mark and preparing your body to receive and advance.

-Don't discount checking strongly toward the ball, giving a one-touch return pass, getting wide and opening up. Attempt to draw your defender into undesirable areas. Be creative and committed.

Progressions:

2v2+2

Assign permanent marks between the two teams. Increase the grid slightly and make the game 2v2+2, still with one ball. Teams must work as a unit now to advance the ball up and down the field. The 3 sections are no longer necessary as the players will be combining through passing, not necessarily working alone through dribbling.

3v3+2

Increase game by one additional player each, increase grid size again if necessary.

NOTE: When the game becomes 2v2 or 3v3, you may wish to remove the assigned marking aspect to force different circumstances and learning outcomes.
