Functional Practise - 4v3 Red Zone Defending
Coach: G. Biggs
Description: Players are in 2 teams. The blues have a 3 in a defensive bank and are matched against 1 centre forward. The reds have 1 centre forward, and 3 players in a channell to rebuild play. The recycling players can carry the ball into the 3v1 grid to create a 3v2. When the ball is in the shaded 3v1 grid its open play, players can be tackled etc. The objective is for the reds to score on the goalkeeper and the blues to get blocks and score in the 2 small goals quickly. A blue player can decide to dribble into the 3v0 channell and score, if thats the case one of the 2 recycling reds can tackle. The 2 red players on the end line distribute footballs into the game and switch with the recycling reds every 3 mins.
Progression 1 - Put 2 red players on the endline into blue shaded channell as wide players, cant be tackled, looking to put crosses in, see how the blues defend. Its then 3v3
Coaching Points:
1) Compactness - Slide and screen allow no gaps between your 3
2) Pressure - When a player recieves in redzone, no turns so engage
3) Cover - If a player engages, can the other 2 react to cover effectively
4) Transition to Defend - if its 2v3 when a blue breaks, can we delay and get a block.

Functional Practise - Sliding & Screening
Description: Players are in 3 teams of 3 or 4. Looking to slide and screen to prevent penetration. The objective of the game is for the 2 teams to pass between eachother and the team in the middle to get a block on the pass.
Progression 1 - One defender can press, how do the teammates slide ad prevent exposure.
Coaching Points:
1) Communication - Leaders needed, who will give the calls to engage, slide, follow
2) Body Shape - Open hips and pivot
3) Sliding - Minimize steps and go sideways + low

Functional Practise - 4v3 Defending/ Staying Compact
Description: A 4v3 game in favour of the attackers. There are 3 lines, two white and one red. The 2 white lines represent as visual guides for the defenders to work with, if the 3 of them can stay between those reds, theres a good chance we'll limit space. The Red line is the engagement line. The Blues cant tackle if the ball is behind that. Red players are looking to score in the goal w/ keeper. Blues in the 2 small goals
Coaching Points:
1) Compactness - When we dont have the ball, can we limit space between ourselves and the opposition
2) 4 D's - Deny, Delay, Deflect, Defend
3) Pressure - We can squeeze on a good trigger
4) Cover - Shift and cover the man pressing, if hes beaten, recover inside

Game - 5v5 + 1
Description: 2 lines of discs represent engagement for both sides, emphasis on dropping deep to set traps rather than first engaging high. Players can set the same traps but deeper. When this is coached for 15 mins, players will be left free to play.
Coaching Points:
1) Shape - Set up as normal 2-2-1 and drop behind the ball to engage
2) Rotation - If RW presses, LW must tuck in to support

Warm Up - 4v2
Coach: G. Daly
Description: Objective is to split the ball between the 2 defenders, if the 2 reds win possession, they need to dribble outside the grid. Outside players can be tackled
- The other 6/8 players will be doing a technical session on the outside of the grid.
- 3 groups, 2 do 4v2 and 1 do technical work
Coaching Points:
