1 v 1 from behind
Here the ball starts with the server. Both the defender and the attacker will start in the middle. The objective is for the attacking player to create separation from the defender, take control of the ball and stop it on or just beyond the opponents line.
Progression
- Allow it to become a real 2 v 1 with the server becoming an active player.
Key Points:
Attacker-
- Off the ball movement. Move in and out of the eyeline. 100% intensity to sell your intentions.
- Body shape to receive the ball. When to pin and when to be open.
- Use of different touches to get away from the defender quickly.
Defender-
- Cut passing lines or get tight.
- Be a hindrance.
- Make play predictable.

2 v 2 faced up
Ball starts with the defender. He rolls the ball forward using the sole of the foot before passing it to the opposition. Both defenders will step out and look to engage while the attackers will look to drive forwards with the ball and get to or beyond the opposition line.
Key Points:
Attackers-
- Positive touches.
- When to take small and bigger touches.
- Be deceptive. Stepovers, shoulder drop, bait the press to exploit the space.
- Know when to commit the defender and when to attack the space.
- Blocks, One-Twos, Overlap, Underlaps.
Defender-
- Be out quickly.
- Be a hindrance. Make contact. Arms around the opponents eyeline. Threaten to pinch.
- Make play predictable.
- Crush the space and momentum.
- Hard to beat mentality.
- Transition quickly when the ball is won.

1 v 1 faced up
Ball starts with the defender. He rolls the ball forward using the sole of the foot before passing it to his partner who now becomes the attacker. The objective is for the attacker to beat the defender and stop the ball either on or beyond his opponents line. The defender should look to prevent access for the attacker and try and win the ball back and transition to the attacker himself.
Key Points:
Attacker-
- Positive touches.
- When to take small and bigger touches.
- Be deceptive. Stepovers, shoulder drop, bait the press to exploit the space.
- Commit the defender and try and lock down his legs.
Defender-
- Be out quickly.
- Be a hindrance. Make contact. Arms around the opponents eyeline. Threaten to pinch.
- Make play predictable.
- Crush the space and momentum.
