Act 1: 4 Goal Game

Start the session with 4 goal game scrimmage. COMPETE - keep score and have consequence for losing team.

Questions for players:

  • How can you threaten to attack both goals at the same time? (players positioned near both goals, make runs towards both goals, switch between attacking both goals)
  • How do you decide which goal to attack? (which goal is more open, where we have more players than the other team)
  • How can you open up space to attack a certain goal? (move the ball to move defenders - pass the ball back, switch the point of attack, move the ball quick)

Act 2: 3v1 Rondo

Start with 3v1 Rondo and progress to Battle Rondos

3v1 Rondo

Attackers keep possession from defender. 10 passes is a good target, 5 is acceptable, 20 is probably too easy.

Change defender when possession is lost.

Encourage speed of play by starting the next round of possession immediately (defender steals the ball they make the first pass right away). Supply of soccer balls in middle so players don't need to chase soccer balls.

Battle Rondos

Two teams of 4 players. Each player numbers themselves off #1-4. Play starts with all 4 teammates passing and moving in their own grid. The Coach calls out one of the #'s 1-4 and that player runs into the opponent's grid to defend 1v3. The defender stays in the grid for 30 seconds, while the attackers compete to see who can get the most total passes. After 30 seconds the team with the least amount of passes has a consequence. Both teams resume with passing and moving in their own grid before the coach yells out a new number.

Coaching Points:

  • Movement to create angle to receive so player on the ball has two options at all times
  • Body shape open to see both teammates and defender at all times
  • Inside foot passing technique - plant foot next to the ball, heel down/toe up, ankle locked on follow through
  • Inside foot receiving technique - balanced/relaxed, heel down/toe up, use far foot to receive
  • Disguise pass - hide your intentions to the defender

Act 3: 5v3

White = Possession team / Blue = Defending team.

White scores in two ways: (1) Play the ball from GK to GK (2) Complete 5 passes in a row

If Blue steals the ball they can score in either goal.

Compete for 2-minute games then rotate positions around. Consequence for the losing team.

When White is in possession they should have players on the outside and a player in the middle. When White loses possession then the outside players can come inside to win possession back.

Coaching Points:

  • Movement to create angle to receive
  • Body shape open to see as many teammates and defenders as possible
  • Scan - look far first, then near. Central player scanning 360 degrees
  • Play the furthest available options to move the defenders
  • Disguise pass - hide your intentions to the defenders
