1v1 Defending/Attacking (20 mins)

1v1 Defending Warm up

Split players into pairs, and assign them a  play area (can be made bigger for weaker players, or smaller for stronger players)

Players take turns attacking their opponents goal and defending their own. Players switch roles once play has stopped or someone has scored

Coaching Points:

Emphasis on body shape and orientation (example: slow players shouldn't mark fast players tightly)

Encourage players to close down space quickly, but leave adequate space that allows the defender to react quickly enough to the attacker

If nets/goals are not available, use two cones spaced out to represent net/goal

5v4 Pressing Game (20 mins)

5v4 Pressing Game

Defenders cannot press beyond the white lines (leave the GKsalone.) GK safe space can be represented with cones on each side of the play area

Team with 5 must leave one player back to act as a safety pass backwards when the team wins possession, or as the last defender back should the team with 4 win possession and counter-attack

Coaching Points:

After a certain number of goals, move a player from the team with 5 to the team with 4, giving the losing team a chance to press aggressively

We want to focus on pressing the ball carrier with one player, while the remaining defenders close down the immediate passing options

Instruct angled runs from defenders. Example: if the attacker is central, the defender should angle their run to cover the attacker behind them while the press the player in possession

We want to get players used to pressing in a 3 with the intention of shooting in the event of a turnover, or playing a pass backwards if there is no opportunity to shoot

5v4 Game (25 mins)

5v4

Blue is looking to beat the red block. Red may press the blue ball carrier with one player, while the remaining defenders look to cover/screen the closest passing options.

Red scores a point by winning possession and passing it into the goals representing two wingers and a striker in a transition.

Blue scores a point by scoring in one of the two small goals.

Coaching Points:

Red central midfielder should press the blue attacking midfielder at the bottom of the blue team's attacking shape.
Defenders want to move the attacking team to either side, away from two central targets. Emphasis on closing down the wide players when the defending central midfielder does not win the ball.

When the red team wins the ball, they should always be looking for space behind the attackers. Example: If the ball is won on the left, there will be space centrally and on the opposite side (the right) to pass to.

Continue to make coaching points made in previous drills in the SSG.

4-3-1 formation, with the two outside central midfielders encouraged to join the forward line to press when in the middle and final third.
