Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): Turning - Technique

Turning - Technique (20 mins)

Organisation:

20x20 yd area split into two areas,

A gate 5 yds wide in the centre of each area,

Players split into two groups,

A ball per group.

Instructions:

The ball starts at one end of the area and is passed to the player in between the gates. Passer then moves towards middle gate to become the next receiver. Receiving player performs a turn to find the player at the opposite end of the area and plays the ball to them and joins the line. Players to work on a number of different turns.

Coaching Points:

Scanning - Players need to have their head up and be aware of the ball, space and other players to pass and maintain possession of the ball.

Speed of play - Between receiving and passing, players should use a fluid motion to receive on the back foot and then pass on the front foot, using both feet to speed up the play.

Execution of turns - When receiving players should focus on turning skills, depending on the space and weight of the pass the turn can be a no touch turn, a turn when side on or a creative turn.
