STRIKING THE BALL MODEL SESSION 1 (SHORT PASSING)

1. SKILL INTRODUCTION

Grid 20m x 20m

2 groups, 6 blues, 6 reds

Start off with 6 reds on the outside of grid, 6 blues on the inside with the balls at their feet.

Blues dribble ball freely until they can pass, ball to a red player, who bounces ball back into space for blue to run on (play a 1-2 pass)

Change rolls on coaches call, players to also use left and right only, again on coaches call.

Coaching Points:

Players to get their head up, before passing ball, to make sure they hit feet, and not two players are passing to same player

Correct weight of pass

Provide good angle when recieving bounce pass

PROGRESSION

Players form pairs, with 1 ball, position themselves opposite to each, about 3m apart other as shown

Players moving towards each other while playing a 1 touch passes until they get within about 1m apart,then contiue passing while moving backwards away from each other, to starting distance point

Players to use, left only right foot only, and combination, on coaches call

Coaching Points:

Looking for corect weight of pass at different distances

Correct tecnique with both feet

2. SKILL TRAININNG

Position players in 2 equal grids about 10m x 10m

4 v 1, as shown on diagram

Players on the outside are trying to keep possession of the ball from the player on the inside, players in possession, should always have a player to their left and right to play to

If defending player wins the ball, they swap with player they won the ball from, or if a player does a bad pass and it goes out of grid, they swap with defending player

Make grid slightly bigger 12m x 12m

Add an extra defender, now it becomes 4 v 2

Player on the ball must always have a player option to their left, right and in between defenders, the pass ion between is the 'killer pass', a pass that is used to splits players

Make grid smaller, if its to easy

Make bigger if its to hard

3. SKILL GAME

20m x 30m pitch

4 v 4 with 4 neutral players on the outside, as shown

4 small goals, as shown

Team in possession can use outside players as bounces, therefore becomes 8 v 4

Rotate outside players after 4 mins, or after each score, scorers stay in

Depending on level of the players, 2-3 touch max to emphasize passing

Progression:

Wall players must play the direct ball

Goals count as double if scored by a so callled '3rd man running', as shown
