Critical moment marking

Use as a warm-up

If rugby tackle pads are available, use those instead of a 1v1 initially and just use them to lean on player and get them used to the physical pressure

  • If not available continue

Rounds of 20-30 seconds

Critical Moment Marking:

  • Using a tennis ball, 4 players pass the ball around the outside randomly (not into the middle)
  • 1v1 in the middle, aim is to use their body and stick fairly to gain an advantage and get in front of the other player

Looking for:

  • Getting more comfortable making contact with player
  • Getting used to making body larger fairly

PCA, 3v3 & Shooting

3v3: 3 players on cones are feeders for 5 rounds (can pass between themselves as well until a good option arises)

  • If they pass the ball in and the receiver passes it back, that player on the cone can join to make it a 4v3
Shooting
  • Pass to player infront of cone wall, player turns and shoots across goal, player looks for deflection (everyone then follows the ball & deflector joins the back of the queue)

Continuous 3v1

How it works

  • Initially, 3 attackers attack 1 goal. If the defender touches the ball the attack is over (if they win it cleanly encourage to outlet back to their team)
  • Next attack is started by the next defender (from the team that just attacked) playing the ball to the player who just defended (who is now an attacker). 2 other players join from the attacking team.
  • If the ball goes off or a goal is scored, the attack is over
  • Progression - Make it 3v2 if too easy (but not until lots of goals are scored - the focus is the ball ending up in the goal, not the difficulty)
Looking for:
  • Attack at pace - don't slow the game down if possible, dynamic first touch
  • Connect at pace and avoid contact
  • Defender - can they protect the middle of the pitch and slow the game down?
Rewards
  • Backpost goal = 1 points
  • Into the netting = 2 points
  • First time finish = 3 points

Continuous 3v2 Start 50% (20 mins)

How it works:

  • 3 attack goal against 2 defenders until they score, the ball goes off or the defenders outlet to their team
  • Once defenders outlet player receiving outlet joins and the previous attackers are out
  • One defender from each side joins

Looking for:

  • Attackers: Get ahead, don't slow the game down if the option is there
  • Defenders: Protect good shooting angles, force the ball wide, scramble defence (slow the game down)
  • Defenders: Point (point at where the threat is), name (call someone to address threat),, action (tell them in two words what to do)
