Description

This session aims to establish principles for building from defence - patience, width (for deception or to maintain possession) and accurate passing.

Two technical drills are used to start the session and begin with principles - Drill #1 replicates a midfielder or centre back receiving pass from back and turning with the ball to play forward. Drill #2 is similar to movements you'll want to see from fullbacks or midfielders, spinning and moving into space.

The Skill/Tactical drill is used to establish positioning and patterns of play to build from the back, and a game is used at the end to allow players more freedom and to showcase understanding of principles out of a direct practice and in a game scenario.

50 minutes is planned for this. The team is able to warm-up in advance of the session so the full hour can be used for the drill. 5 to 10 minutes are planned for explanations and drinks breaks.

Technical Drill #1 (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Drill aims to get players playing firm passes, while receiving the ball on the half-turn and playing to opposite player

Organisation

  • Two cones around 16 yds apart, a player on each cone with another stood between them.
  • Player #1 starts with ball, they play a firm pass to Player #2.
  • Player #2 controls ball on half-turn, and passes outside to Player #3
  • Player #3 controls the ball, then plays another firm pass back to Player #2, who turns and plays to Player #1 and play restarts
  • Switch central player after 1 - 2 minutes
  • If there are incorrect numbers of players, pull opposite cone in closer and have central player dribble around it

Technical Drill #2 - Advancement (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Advancement on Technical Drill #1, with further movement added
  • Movement is meant to replicate off-ball runs to find space, aka 'spinning'

Organisation

  • Player A starts with ball and passes to Player B
  • Player B plays ball straight back, before spinning and running around cone to left or right
  • Player A, in possession, plays through-ball to Player B as they make run around the cone
  • Player B then passes out to Player C, before returning to centre and restarting drill with Player C starting with ball.

Skill/Tactical Drill (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • The aim of the drill is to play from the goalkeeper and encourage playing from the back to work the ball from defence to midfield
  • Defending team (red) have two extra players through goalkeeper and spare man to encourage teams to play wide and use width to open spaces

Organisation

  • Two teams, defending team with two more players (one as goalkeeper) so it's 7 v 5 (or 6 v 5 if just counting outfield players)
  • Ball starts as goal kick from goalkeeper who must find players
  • Red team must play from back while blue team pressures them, red team's goal is to either dribble through wide cones or to shoot in small goal in centre circle (can only shoot when in circle) - This aims to replicate either A. Having fullbacks drive down the wings into space or B. Have midfielders/defenders pass ball into goal to replicate a through-ball through centre
  • If Blues win ball, they can attack goal and try to score
  • This is a drill for 12 players (1 goalkeeper), if an even number then add extra players into both teams (and expand play area if required) - If odd number, use extra player to either make drill easier (extra defender) or harder (extra attacker pressing)

Screen 4 (15 mins)

Key Factors

  • Standard small-sided game, but if ball goes out then play restarts from goalkeeper to encourage playing from defence

Organisation

  • Use half a pitch or a playing size dependent on numbers, with either two goals for two 'keepers or have a smaller goal for 'rush goalies'
  • Ball must start with either goalkeeper to encourage building from the back each time
  • If play is too broken up by this rule, then revert to a standard game. For last 5/10 minutes this may also be a good idea to encourage creativity and increase tempo
