Warm up - Relay Race

Organization:

  • 10x20 yard areas, made up of 2 5x20 yard lanes.

Instructions:

  • Simple relay race to start. players run to the end of the lane, turn back, tag the next person in line. first team to finish wins. 
  • make two areas as shown for more races if needed, but also for the next couple of activities

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Be fast,
  • Big step out to make a sharp turn at the end to come back quickly.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: Race goes to the first line of cones then turns back. Everyone goes twice. This allows players to get more turns in, and the shorter distance allows for more stop and go practice. (Shown in the area on the right side.)

Tech Reps - Turns

Organization:

  • Same as before.

Instructions:

  • Players Messi dribble to middle line where they perform u-turn, makes eye contact with the next player in line, now dribbles back like Ronaldo.
  • Next player goes when they make eye contact with dribbler.
  • Players practice turning back with the inside of the boot, then the outside.
  • If Player level allows, now Messi dribble to middle line and perform stop-tap
    and do u-turn on end line

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Messi dribbling - Small touches, pinky toe, head up as much as possible.
  • Ronaldo dribbling - Touch every step, head up after every touch, touch in stride.
  • Technique of stop-start.
  • Use of body to fake the turn. (big step in front of ball from the relay race turns)
  • Ball out of feet and head up.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: Cruyff turns, stop taps, stop tap fakes (cont dribbling forward)
  • Move players to the opposite ends of the lanes to have players dribbling at each other, and turning away from each other (blue players in the image).

Organization:

  • Same. Attackers with a ball on the outside lanes, defenders on inside lanes.

Instructions:

  • Attackers are looking to score in either goal.
  • 3 pts for goal A, 1 pt for goal B.
  • Players have 7 seconds to score point.
  • Players begin on attacker's first touch.
  • Defenders cannot tackle until attacking player enters their channel.

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Ronaldo touches to attack space
  • Look for early chance to cross ball (score in top goal)
  • Use of stop-start to create separation
  • Use of turn to create separation for cross (if deep on byline)
  • If turning, moving ball quickly (switch point of attack in game)

Regressions/Progressions:

  • P: Defenders can cross line after players 1st touch
