Session objective: Lay down the defensive principles of how we defend crosses.
Player tasks:
- Fullback apply immediate and consistent pressure to the ball in the wide areas.
- Centrebacks attack the ball and put it back where it came from. If we are too cute trying to redirect it we might get caught whilst reshuffling our defensive structure.
- One centreback attacks defends/protects the keeper the other is touch tight to the striker.
- When the keeper goes up for a catch its important that the closest player retreats to the line just in case he drops the ball. This could easily be the fullback depending on how the picture looks though.
- All players whilst defending should be taking small steps so that they dont over commit and are unable/too slow to change direction.
- Furthest player from the ball can see the whole play across the line and must use that to instruct others. Keeper is important aswell to help that fullback have an idea of whats over his shoulder.
Stepup:
Add a striker or two

Attackers
Session objective: Hold up play to build an attack.
Player tasks:
#9 as the first receiver, engage early with the defender using the rugby pad so that you can be set and balanced before the ball comes in.
#9 peel off the blindside of the rugby pad holder between the mannequins, move from offside to onside to receive again in behind.
#9 The longer you can hold off the defender the more you drag him out leaving space behind. Balance between holding up too long and not long enough.
#9 on the first shot if running front post do not allow the goalkeeper to collect it at a minimum.
#9 on the second shot, peel off to the back post using the cues of the crosser to formulate your run (ie his body shape- is he about to cross the ball).
#9 and second striker; meet the ball to contact it firmly, dont dangle or be reaching for the ball as itll like go over or not have enough power.
Wide players aiming to hit the 6 yard area on first cross.
#8/#10 through ball must play the appropriate pass, is it to close to the keeper, can you bend it around so the striker run isnt disrupted.
