Technical Warm-Up (15 mins)

Set-Up

  • 4 large cones, 4 small cones
  • 1 ball per player
Diagram Description
  • Have players complete various fundamental movement exercises around the cone and jog back to line (ie. high knees, butt kicks, open gates, close gates, etc.)
  • Then have all players with a ball, divided between the four orange cones (have multiple stations for decreased wait times).
  • Complete various dribbling exercises, dribbling out and around the red cone in front of them or turning before the red cone.
  • After players are familiar with the activity, finish with a relay between the four groups.

If time permits, add a defender inside the box with the four red cones. Have players look for opportunities to dribble around the red cone. If the defender is too close, have the players turn.

Add another defender for an added challenge.

SSG - Crossing Game (30 mins)

Organization:

  • Make 2 18 yard boxes as the playing area with 2 goals and 2 teams.
  • Outside the 18 yard sideline is the space for the edge players to play. They cannot move into the opponents outside area nor can they enter into the field of play. Players in the middle can't go into the winger's area.

Instructions:

  • The goal is simple, the ball must be played wide before a goal can be scored.
  • Players on the outside have 2 touches, players on the inside have as many as they like. Feel free to change up the rules depending on the need for the group.

Technical/Tactical:

  • Quality and types of crosses.
  • Try not to use 2 touches on the outside, have your head up on the reception and see if you can one time it in or need the 2nd touch.
  • The ball does not have to be crossed, sometimes it's better to find a set pass instead or simply to bring the ball back to keep possession.
  • Decide the weight and position of the pass, a cross does not have to be high or back post to be effective.
  • Players in the field of play must time their runs according to the cross, don't be in the box waiting for the cross and then have no momentum to make a solid attack at net.

Psychological:

  • Attacking mentality, aggressive for balls in the air.

Physical:

  • Power for cross
  • Change of speed for runs
  • Jumping

Social/Emotional:

  • Communication, awareness of other players movements.

Technical (Unopposed) - Crossing and Finishing in 2s (15 mins)

Crossing and Finishing in 2s

Player 1 passes to player 2 on the ground (treating it like a cm switching to an open wing mid).

Player 2 takes their 1st touch hard up the line through the gate.

Player 1 makes a bellowed run through the gate to the penalty spot.

Player 2 bellows their run to get their hips square to make their cross into the box (on the ground).

Player 1 times their run, they should be at the gate when player 2 appraoches the ball for the cross so that they are on the move when the cross happens.

Progressions

1. Crosses on the ground before progressing to crosses in the air.

2. Send two players at a time (First post, far post).

3. Finish with 1 touch.

* Create two stations if possible for less lines!

Final Game - 5v5 or 6v6 (30 mins)

Set up a 5v5 or 6v6 game dependent on the amount of players available (may need a neutral or coach in net).

  • Try a conditioned game where you can only score off a cross or from a finish in the "second 6-yard box".
  • Last 15 minutes. Let the boys play! Encourage players to work on the theme of the session.
