Playing through the thirds, locked in (15 mins)

Set up

Area is split into 3 zones to signify the thirds of the pitch with 2 target areas set up at each end. Defenders, midfielders and strikers start the practice in the zones that they play in, ie defenders in own third, midfielders in the central thrid and attackers in the end third. One target man is placed from each team in the end zone.

Aim of the practice is to play from the back through to the target man. Play is one directional and if team successfully play into their target then the ball will start with that target player who will work for the other team.

Players are locked into their own area and cannot enter the other zones, more points are scored if the ball is played through all of the zones to the target, i.e 3 points if played through all 3 zones, 2 points if only 2 zones are hit, and 1 point if only 1 zone is hit.

Set up

Same set up as previous practice with the same aims however now the practice is played with free play and the players are no longer locked into their zones and are free to move anywhere on the pitch.

Still the same point scoring as this will encourage playing out from the back.

Half pitch playing out from the back (30 mins)

Set up

Half pitch game with one goal and 3 sets of gates on the halfway for the red team to play out and attack through.

Play always starts from the goalkeeper who play out from the back and build the attack through the midfield and through the thirds of the pitch.

When a pattern of play is built and practiced start to introduce throwins and corners to build on playing out from different scenarios.
