Set Piece: Patterns of play

Defending Goal-Kick/Build Up (Phase 1) Description:

Organization (Phase 1):

Our shape is determined by where the ball is and who has the ball. If and when the opposition's GK and/or Center Back has possession our team looks to fill the middle to prevent penetration through the central channels. We do not begin to press until we are able to make ourselves compact while also baiting the opposition to play into the wide channels. Please take note of the shaded area. The grey area indicates that we have a number advantage in that area of the field.

Set Piece: Patterns of play

Defending Goal-Kick/ Build Up (Phase 2) Description:

Organization (Phase 2):

Once the opposition has moved the ball onto one half of the field it our team's job to first prevent a switch of play, deny penetration through the middle, and then lastly to force the play wide into the opposition's outside backs.

*Note that the far side outback and outside midfielder are left free. This is so we can create a number advantage in the middle channels. We must still keep track of the free opposition using our peripheral vision.

Set Piece: Patterns of play

Defending Goal-Kicks/Build Up (Phase 3) Description:

Organization (Phase 3):

As the ball travels to the opposition's outside back that is the trigger to pressure the opponent to force them to play into the middle of the field where we have created a number advantage.

Set Piece: Patterns of play

Defending Goal-Kicks/Build Up (Phase 4) Description:

Organization (Phase 4):

Once we win the ball in the middle of pitch we must quickly move number higher up the field (the strong side outside back, the two attacking midfielders, and the three front men.) If this transition is done quickly we should have a number advantage.

Numbers In the Box on Crosses Description:

Organization:

The organization of this sequence is fairly straightforward. Our strong side full-back (in this case Nassar) is moving up the pitch to provide width either via the overlap or from a supporting position. The faster this happens the faster we create a numerical advantage in the wings and create an opportunity to deliver a cross.

Runners: There are three zones that need to be covered: the near post, the back post, and the PK spot. Before making each run the players must work offset of the ball so they are not waiting for the cross but attacking the cross.

Crossers: Get as close to the end line as possible, and take a touch inside so you are able to turn your hips towards your desired target.
