Teaching the players to work as a unit to set the trap by controlling the appropriate areas and allowing the game come to them.

What: Setting the trap
Who: 8,9,10
Where: Defensive Half
When: The ball goes wide
Why: To recover ball
Shown as 4 v 3 +1 . Scale to size. Have to have a minimum of three defenders in the middle.
Instruction: GK plays ball wide. The blue 9. 8. 10, move as an unit to set the trap.
1. The defender closest to the ball curls his approach to the strong side to remove the width option.
2. The strong side defender covers the penetrate option.
3. The weak side mid defender balances himself between the width option and diagonal pass.
The attacking team plays rondo until the defensive team recovers. Once they recover the ball they play it to their target, the GK, and the GK plays it wide. The GK pass into play is a free pass.
Continuous play for 5 minutes. Three games. After each game switch out the 8, 9, and 10.
Coach in in the flow and individual reference after I demonstrate.
Score: The defending team gets 1 point every time they recover the ball and complete pass to the GK. The attacking team gets 1 point for 5 consecutive passes.

Who: The whole team
Where: Middle Third
When: The ball goes wide or middle
Why: To recover ball
Shown as 3v3 + 2. Scale to size. Have to have a minimum of three defenders in the middle.
Game: 5 x 3 Directional Rondo. Target plays ball in. Objective for the attacking team: Play the ball to the other side. Objective for defending team: intercept pass and connect to target OR take ball off foot and connect to target.
Once ball goes out, the target from the opposite plays ball in.
1. Defender nearest to the ball: approach fast, arrive slow, angled approach
2 Defender furthest from the ball: find target, then ball, then the man closest to you and triangulate.
3. Defender in between: Cover vertical passing channel . Anticipate the pass.
The attacking team plays torward their target until the defensive team recovers the ball. Once they recover the ball they play it to their target.
Continuous play for 2 minutes. 8 games. After each game switch out the two lines and targets. 90 second rest in-between.
Observe how they organize. Make note if they are closing the DCG, when and who they pressure, how they cover and balance. Coach by freezing them to correct their techique, in the flow and individual reference

Phase: Defense Phase 2 - Collective Defending
Problem: The attackers are threatening to advance the ball up the field
Who: 9,7,11,8,2,3
Where: Midddle Third
When: Forcing the ball to the side.
What: 9 cuts middle; 7 or 11 move to ball and force it inside; covers the middle; 2 or 3 either squeeze if ball is played to the middle or shift to the outside and force play to inside if ball is played to the outside.
Why: to recover the ball and begin attack
Layout: 30 x 50 field; trapping zones 10 x 18.
Restrictions: 7v7 ; 2:10:2; the CB must play ball to target zone;
Scoring: 1 point for recovering ball in a trap; 1 point for connecting out to 2 or 3; 1 point to target net. 1 point for playing ball to opposite CB.
Game: Play to outside; set the trap; Attacking team works ball to opposing CB; Defending team recovers ball and connects out to the 2 or 3 who then connect to the target net.

Instruction: GK plays to 4 and 5. The red play a penetrating pass their 8, 9, or 10. The blue 9. 8. 10, move as an unit to set the trap. If blue recovers the ball, they play to target. If red maintains possession they play to their targets while the blue 2, 3, or 4 set the trap. Should the blue recover, they play to their 8, 9, or 10.
Once ball goes out, the coach plays another ball in.
1. The 9 curls his approach to the strong side to remove the width option.
2. The strong side mid or fullback (either the 8 or 10; 2 or 3) covers the penetrate option.
3. The weak side mid or fullback (either the 8 or 10; 2 or 3) balances himself between the width option and diagonal pass.
The attacking team plays torward their goal until the defensive team recovers the ball. Once they recover the ball they play it to their goal.
Continuous play for 15:00 minutes.
Observe how they organize. Make note if they are closing the DCG, when and who they pressure, how they cover and balance. Coach in the flow and individual reference

GK plays ball wide to red. The blue 9. 8. 10, and 6 move as an unit to "get it" The attacking team plays rondo until the blue team "gets it" Once they got it they play it down to the opposite GK and move to the other half while the orange 6.8,9,10 tries to "get it"
Rotate the defending team every 90 seconds.
Observe how they organize. Make note if they are closing the DCG, when and who they pressure, how they cover and balance.
Score: The defending team gets 1 point every time they recover the ball and another point for a completed pass to the GK. The attacking team gets 1 point for 5 consecutive passes.
