Description

While we will touch on offensive and defensive transitions in every activity, we will have a greater focus on transition to defense and what that looks like. Emphasis on initial pressure and an aggressive defensive mentality.

Warm-Up (10 mins)

-European Handball (3 games)

-When in possession of ball, players can only take 3 steps

-Must get rid of ball within 5 seconds

-Defensively players can put pressure but cannot "swat" at ball

-Goal is scored by tossing game ball at the ball on the cone and knocking it off

-For fun and to get moving but emphasize getting back defensively

Initial Game (15 mins)

-25x30

-3 team possession (2 teams vs. 1)

-blue and yellow start on offense while red defends

-blue and yellow are trying to keep possession as long as possible

-if blue (for example) loses possession (ball goes out of bounds or red defenders win ball) they now transition to defense and red joins yellow on offense

Focus on: what do we do when we lose ball? Get compact quickly, initial pressure, support, shape in behind

Analytical (15 mins)

-2v1 --> 1v1 transition to goal 15x25, ~8 players per grid

2v1 portion SHOWN above on left side (play always starts this way)

-1 blue (Defender) plays ball into 2 reds (attackers)

-reds combine to try to score on main goal

1v1 transition portion (either of these 2 situations could occur):

a) if blue player WINS ball, they try and score on 2 small pug goals against 1 red. The last red player that touched the ball stays in to defend.

b) *SHOWN above on right side* -if blue DOES NOT WIN ball (AKA red gets shot off but misses, red scores, or ball goes out of bounds) they still get a chance to try and attack. They will get a ball played to them from their teammates beside the goal

-once again, last red to touch ball stays in to defend (shaded player). Other red goes back to line.

-once this plays out, play starts over with pass from the 1 blue into the 2 reds

Focus on: Blue defender not diving in, aggressive defensive mentality from the red player who must stay in to defend. Hard initial pressure on ball (without diving in - slow them down but put them under real pressure)
