Keepy uppy target game (15 mins)

2 players per 4x4 yard square, can they get as many touches of the ball as possible while maintaining control in the square. Start with 90 seconds right foot only, 90 seconds with the left foot, 90 seconds both feet, then introduce other body parts. Get the kids to set a target and catch the ball after reaching that target or continue to achieve a high score, then set a new high target. Allow a bounce in between every touch. When the children are tired in between rounds, get them to balance the ball in different ways e.g. foot, trap between feet, chest, head, back of neck (placed).

Coaching points: Try and hit underneath the ball to make it go up

- contact with tope of your toes, laces to generate back spin, or side foot (internal rotation from hip joint and thigh start parralel to ground, knee bent).

- Thigh, chest, forehead, top of shoulder.

Homework: Try the "Deeney" 7 (right foot, left foot, Right thigh, left thigh, right shoulder, left shoulder, chest/ head).

First touch receive and turn (15 mins)

Get the kids into groups of 3 or 2 with the coach serving if not enough players. One player serves initially by doing a ground pass, receiving player looking to receive the ball under pressure from a defender and get travel with the ball through the gate. The receiving player can return the ball once to the server who gives it back at the request of the receiver. The receiver must indicate when they want it through gestures, body language or vocal communication e.g "yes!" If the defender wins the ball they return the ball to the server. Alternate the 3 every minute, who can score the most points?

Progression:

- give defender a ball to dribble to slow them down if needs be.

- throw ins and under arm serves

- Ask the kids to be creative with how they beat the defender, flicks, feints (drop shoulder one way and take ball the other), over their head, no touch, 1 or 2 touch turn, can I beat a player with my back to them?

-2v2, server joins the playing area or use a bigger area and have a server for the 2.

Coaching points:

- Hide; Split stance before receiving, look to receive on back foot or if defender is behind, keep on front foot, knees bent, slight forward lean, rear arm up to shield ball.

- Receive with instep, sole of foot, outside of foot or manipulate with foot.

- Maneouvre: maintain body shape on the move, look to turn into space or feints to create space by going one way (unbalance defender) then changing direction/ turning another.

- Reveal: When do we risk losing the ball and attempt to score by showing it to the defender, if we cannot maneouvre into space while hiding the ball?

- Encourage kids to take risks, try something now and add it to your toolbox.
