 We are aware this recreates game like decision making, but it also covers proper defending.

Rules of Defense

  • Make the pass predictable by

   a.)One pressure the ball

   b.)One support off the ball opposite, just off the first defender's shoulder.

  • When the ball travels, you travel.
  • Prevent the split by dropping back in after they pass.

Successful defenders:

  • Press fast and composed, the offense won't get out of trap and become predictable. 
  • Quickly drop in central, so they can't look to split.
  • Communicate to limit hesitation

Preventing the cross


Objective:

Prevent the cross from the offensive threat by shadowing their movements.

Rules:

The player without the ball can't crossover the line to win the ball.

The player with the ball can't crossover the line to cut in.

Great defenders:

  • Play patient defense 
  • Keep them towards the sideline
  • Prevent the opposition from cutting back in
  • Prevent the cross

Objective: 

First player prevents the cross

Second player prevents the shot initially, or prevents a goal.

Emphasis:

  • Stay goal side inside the box 
  • Prevent the shot or make the shot predictable for your goalie
  • Clear the ball up in the air and out towards the sideline
