1v1 in a 10x12 yd grid. The defending player passes the ball across an attacking player who scores by getting the ball through the yellow gate.  If the defending player wins the ball they score in the small counter-attack diagonal yellow gate.  Each player defends three times, then the two groups switch sides.

Coaching Points:

  • Bend Runs to force the attacker wide to the line
  • Start fast then control your speed.
  • Don't get your feet planted but keep them moving
  • Pivot off the back foot to jockey
  • Be patient the first one to react usually loses the 1v1 battle
  • Step in to tackle right after the attacker touches the ball
  • Watch the ball
  • Stay low
  • Make the player with the ball go through you to get to the goal.
  • We want him to dribble down the line.

2v2 in a 12x15 yd grid. This part of the session is working on Pressure, cover, and communication in the roles of each.  The attacking team passes the ball back on fourth.  The defending team alternates pressuring and cover movements.

Coaching Points:

  • The closest defender says I got it or some other such statement to indicate that they have the pressure on the player with the ball.  This keeps from both players closing on the ball.
  • The cover defender tells his teammate player name. press the man with the ball or Fred press him right
  • The pressure defender closes on the ball while the cover defender drops at an angle that is behind the pressure defender and spits the two attackers to where he can support the first attacker or intercept a pass to the second attacker.
  • When you drop to cover don't backpedal but swivel your hips and run side on to get into position.
  • When the defenders seem to understand and can demonstrate the action switch roles.
