When ball is played from the back, Defense starts in tight.

  • Forwards (9&10) are dropped in front of midfield waiting for the ball to be played
  • Attacking midfielders (11&7) are tucked into the middle and looking to front the opponent's midfielders
  • Holding midfielders (6&8) are playing pressure cover on opposing attacking mids
  • One Center back (4 or 5) steps to opposing forward.  
  • Remaining Centerback and outside backs (2&3) provide depth behind the forward.

When ball is played to opposing center defenders:

  • 9 or 10 steps to defend the opposing player with the ball.
  • Other forward drops to center into a cover position.  Cuts off passing lanes to midfielders
  • 7 & 11 pinch into midfield to deny passes to opposing midfielders
  • 6 or 8 step to the remaining midfield threat.
  • Other Holding midfielder positions himself to protect the back line from a long ball
  • 4 or 5 step to the center forward while the other drops at depth into a cover position
  • 2 & 3 pinch to the middle and align with the deeper center back

When ball is played to opposing outside defenders:

  • 7 or 11 step to opposing outside back and force them away from the sideline
  • opposite attacking midfielder tucks into the midfield anticipating a pass to the opposing midfielder
  • 9 & 10 Play pressure/cover on the opposing center back closest to the play.  Forward in cover looks to deny passing lane to midfield
  • 6 & 8 play pressure/cover on opposing midfielder closest to the play.  One steps up while the other drops to prepare for any long ball in the middle
  • 2 & 3 step up to opposing wing/forward when they are on the play side.  Back side drops into alignment with deeper centerback
  • 4 & 5 play pressure cover on center forward.  Do not leave the forward open to receive a pass.  Other centerback gets depth to prepare for any long ball.

When Ball is Played into the middle:

  • 8 or 6 step up to meet the ball.  The other holds in a cover position.
  • 7 and 11 pinch towards the middle to cut off passing lanes to the other opposing midfielders.  Look to double team when ball goes behind them
  • The back line continues to keep shape with the 4 or 5 stepping to a forward and the others getting shape behind
  • The forwards look to put pressure on the ball from behind top force a rushed pass or mistake.  Double team opposing midfielders

When ball is played to an outside forward/wing:

  • 2 or 3 must step hard to the ball and force the player to the inside (Unless attacking player is in their front third of the field)
  • Play side Center back steps to first threat (forward)
  • Other two defenders provide depth and balance
  • 6 or 8 take away first threat in midfield while other holds the middle and scans for penetrating runs
  • Play side attacking mid double teams down
  • Forwards take away back passes

    When ball goes to center forward:

    • 4 or 5 steps to the play.  Does not try to dive and steal the ball.  Waits for a mistake
    • Remaining three defenders pinch in tight towards goal
    • 6 & 8 seek to double team on the ball or find open midfielders
    • 7 & 11 tighten towards middle to pick up any open midfielders
    When opposing midfielders seek to run through, 6 & 8 will run with them to get in front of the ball
    When opposing outside backs make overlaps, 7 & 11 will go with them
