Goal Line Corners
Objective:
To create space inside of the 6 yard box with movement away to take the defender out, following by attacking the ball/space
Preparation:
- 6-7 attackers into the box.
- #2 & #3 stay back as defenders we assume marking 1 striker. Additional striker, #6 to hold so always numbers up on defense unless game situation requires taking risks
Execution:
- #11, #9, #5, #4 & #7 all begin on the goal line.
- #11 just a few yards off of the goal line at the back post.
- #6 at the penalty spot.
- #8 out wide making a late run to show for a short corner.
- This starting point makes it difficult for defenders to know where the runs will be made.
Quality:
- As the corner taker proceeds towards the ball, players will make a 5-7 yard sprint at an angle away from the ball, then sprint towards finishing point. Important, two movements: 1 sprint at an angle away (Red arrows) then sprint back & attack the ball
- #8 sprints to show late for the ball as a short corner or as a supporting player
- #7 at the corner of the 6 yard box to flick a near post ball onwards.
- #4 finishes near the line at the near post.
- #9 finishes central on the 6 yard box.
- #5 finishes slightly behind the back post on the 6 yard box.
- #11 finishes 12 yards high, outside of the back post, not allowing anything to carry out past that area, but can continue run 12 yards high more centrally depending on where the ball is coming into.
- #6 finishes a few yards outside of the 18 yard box, and must 1 touch drive towards goal any ball that comes out. This player should NEVER take a player on in order to prevent an outnumbered counter attack. #6 & #8 must foul & stop the play in defensive third, if opponent counter attaks
- If a short corner occurs, all players should repeat the initial runs and not stand in one place.

Defending Crosses (10 min)
Organization: Defenisve 1/3 with Lg Goal. 16 balls. #4, #5, #6 set up zonally inside of 6 yd line. GK communicates "Keeper" for balls the GK will catch or "Away" for defenders to clear balls out. #7 & #11 play balls into the 6, rotating each side.
Coaching Points: Win the ball at the highest point, communicate, attack balls, play balls away from danger, pressure attacking players no matter if you can get to the ball or not. Vaiation: add #2 & #3 on the posts & add attacking players

Zonal/Man Defensive Corner
#2 & #3 Protect the posts. Two players placed on each post to clear shots off the line that beat the keeper and cover the keeper if they attempt to punch or catch the ball.
#4, #5, #6 stand inside the six. Each player defends players/balls that come into their zones, one each opposite the posts and one opposite the centre of the goal
#7 (#11), #10 & #8 are man marking players from outside the 6 who are making runs
#11 (#7) Disrupt the kicker. The defender stands 10 yards from the player taking the corner kick to prevent the ball from being driven to the near post, or tries to block the kick by jumping, so forcing the attacker to play the ball differently. The #11 (#7) takes responsibiliity for short corners also.
If opponents sends additional players forward, reinforce the near post area with #9 in the six-yard box, outside the near post and few yards from the goal-line to guard against dangerous ‘flick-ons’
The #9 will lead the counter-attack so when the ball is cleared they can hold it to allow team-mates to get out. #11 (#7) should be quick to join in counterattack. Play balls to the pockets, preferably to the side with space or with the #11 (#7)
#1 should stand in a position where they can see the ball and as much of the penalty area as possible, which will mean a little forward from the goal line near the middle of the goal. Decision has to be made early whether or not to challenge for the ball by catching or punching. Catch the lofted ball at it's highest point & approach the ball from behind, not directly. Balls driven near post requrie a direct approach

Defending Game - Heading Practice (20 min)
Organization: Mark out a pitch about 35 x 20 yards (The size can be adjusted to suit the age and
ability of the players). Two goals, with goalkeepers. Play a 2-1-1. Players to rotate every 2 goals or 3 min. There are six servers with footballs, located around the perimeter of the pitch and numbered. The servers can move up and down their areas to provide different angles and heights of crosses and balls into the defensive area. Encourage free play and the team in possession can pass the ball to any of the servers and the defensive team must then adjust and organise for the thrown cross. If the ball goes out of play, the coach can also call the number of a server for the ball to be thrown into. The defensive team then transition, get compact and attack crosses.
Coaching Points:
1. Communication between defenders and GK ("Keeper" or "Away")
2. Defenders work as a unit, one attacking the ball, the others providing cover
3. Start position in relation to where the ball is served from
4. Get in the line and attack the ball down the line of the cross
5. Timing of run and jump
6. Select relevant defensive heading technique
7. Protect the goalkeeper if they come for the cross
8. After defensive header, organize & look for counter attack
9. Squeeze up the pitch if possible after the ball has been headed clear

Set Play: Short Corner (15 mins)
Set Play: Short Corner
The group of players set up outside of the far post to creat space in the box. Corner taker determines if there is space to play make an overlaping run around 2 then holds both arms up. 2 cheks into corner as 11 plays ball then overlaps towards corner of 18. 2 forces defender to commit to him (If defender tracks 11, 2 dribbles into box. If defender commits, 2 plays into 11). Decisions are made as to continure combination play, cross or shoot/play driven ball.
Variation: 2 has the option to play Corner taker on a wall pass if marking defender takes away passing angle and if post defenders keep Corner taker in an onside position
