Technical When coaching I will be looking at the players technique when receiving on the back foot, can they receive side on allowing them to play forward as one of the coaching aims is look forward to play forward. I will also be looking at the players weight of pass, can they complete the pass at the right weight to break the lines but not make it a struggle for their team mate to control. |
|
Tactical Having a set formation for the initial block of the session where the players are locked into their zones, giving them a set formation such as 2-2-1 allows for better structure when the session develops and it is a free roam game. By doing this it allows players to continue to play through the thirds whilst also having the freedom to go wherever on the pitch. |
|
Physical If a ball goes out of play incentives such as 7 seconds to get the ball back into play and rolling allows the intensity to stay at a high level throughout the session. With the session being based on playing through the thirds it is physically demanding due to the limited space to start off with makes it hard for players to get on the ball, leading to constant movement in attempt to become involved. |
|
Psychological When any of the coaching aims I have set out are achieved give praise to the players, encouraging them to do it again to get the best out of the players in regard to the session. Players may get frustrated if they are unsuccessful with playing through the thirds so the session may need to be catered around helping the player so I am able to get the most out of the player. |
|
Social Providing demonstrations after the initial brief to cater for all learning styles, letting all players fully grasp the concept of the session. When using coaching process such as: ODR, FDR or freeze, give reasons behind it don't just pass on information to players, freeze it & then give a demonstration or let players demonstrate why the points you made work & the consequences of taking the points on board. |

Pitch Size: 25x45.
The pitch will be split into thirds - 1v2 in first zone, 2v2 in second zone, 1v2 final third.
Players will be locked in their allocated zone (to start with).
Players can only take shots in the final third.
The ball can be played into any third.
Equipment:
- Tactics board.
- Ball nests either side of the goals to emphasise rolling ball time.
- Whistle & Stopwatch.
- Flat Discs/Markers
- 5 Yellow & 5 Blue bibs.
Coaching Aims:
Limited touches to emphasise moving the ball quicker.
Look forward to play forward. Why?
Can you break lines effectively to produce a goalscoring opportunity?
Health & Safety:
- Playing surface, ensure players have the appropriate footwear for the day.
- First Aid kit in anticipation of any injuries.
Progressions:
A player can move into the next zone after they have progressed the ball forward - after the ball is dead, the player will move back into their original allocated zone.
After players are confident with playing through the thirds, the flat discs will be removed, allowing players to have complete freedom within the game to move around and play through the thirds in a realistic game scenario without being restricted into zones.
Within the restriction free game teams will be given 2 goals if they are able to break lines and go onto score to incentivise the session aim of playing through the thirds.
Repetition:
As the session is based on playing through the thirds the players involved will be constantly repeating the same phases of play with slight alterations to give them optimal chance for improvement.
Realism & Relevance:
Being able to play through the thirds is an essential factor in football and is a skill required at all walks of football.
When the discs are removed the drill will become more game realistic as they are no longer restricted in their zones, giving them similar freedom to a real 11v11 game.
