The practice then moves up the pitch in the same way as previous but when the player gets to the red line they pass the ball back to the goal keeper. if no keeper available then back to a coach. Rotate the roles so all players protect and chase. Move players along to different channels to get used to different angles on the pitch.
Progression:
When players are competant remove players being passive and allow them to try and tackle.
Key points:
Move body position to block player trying to come around you to steel the ball. Encourage need to be aware position of opponent. Before making pass make sure ball is moved into space then look at target briefly then make pass.

Area:
Use have a pitch to simulate a high defensive line and create chanels either side of the penalty area with a line across the top to identify the high line starting position.
Equipment:
Discs, cones, bibs, balls goal.
Objective:
The defensive unit is made up of goal keeper and 3 defenders. The attacking unit is made up of 5 players (3 attackers and 2 supporting midfielders)
The denfenders line up on the line as shown to simulate a high defensive line. The 3 attackers start on the shoulder simulating being ready for a ball over the top into the channels.
The two midfield players pass and move around the centrre circle only a couple of yards apart from each other.

On their decision they then play a penetrating pass into either channel. The closest attacking player runs into the channel and collects the ball. The defenders have to retreat to defend their goal. The other 2 attackers break into the box and now the 2 supporting midfield players support the strikers and join the attack. The attacker in the channel can not be opposed in the channel. he can chose to cross or as soon as they come inside they can be tackled. To make the counter attack more realistic and quick the attackers phase of play only lasts 20 seconds from when they pass the ball into the channel.
The practice is reset and repeated. After 5 mins change players around. If you have extra players the extra players could be passing the ball then feeding it into the channels.
Key points:
1. make sure defenders are on the half turn and alert.
2. Make sure defenders run back to corresponding points 1, 2, 3..The back post player runs to No.1, the middle player runs to the penalty spot and the near post player runs to the edge of the area position 3 to hold the player with the ball.
Making sure the defenders get back into these positions to start will make it more difficult for the attackers and allow defending midfielders to get back and help.
Progression:
Use the extra passing players at the start of the move to be the recovering defensive midfield players.
No time restrictions and play until the ball goes dead.

Area:
Create channels approx 5m wide and 15m long
Equipmet:
cones, discs, balls
Objective:
put 4 players in each channel with 3 at one end and 1 at the other. 2 players start the practice as shown in chaneel 1. The red player feeds to ball along the ground or over the head of the blue player who runs onto the ball. As soon as the blue player goes the red player can chase down the red player. to start with the red player is only allowed to put pressure from behind and not actually tackle. The blue player has to protect the ball and dribble back down to the other end with the ball under control. Once they are a in the yellow zone they can pass to the blue player on the bottom.
