Description

Orientation for 9v9 where blues executing a high block preventing the reds from playing out from the GK through their defensive third. Blues line up in 1-2-3-3 formation against reds in a 1-4-3-1 formation. Start with reds trying to build up good possession from the GK with penetrating passes through midfielders or wide players

Method: 9v9 working with blues to execute high press from 1-2-4-2 formation (no FBs) against reds playing out from GK in 1-4-3-1 (No WAs) formation. Start with reds GK looking to play out. 

Coaching Points:

  • Good decision-making and pass from opposition GK playing out through the thirds
  • Blue strikers force GK to play longer or set a trap to compete for the ball
  • Blue midfielders compact and closing space to attackers 
  • Ensure good tempo to the activity at match pace

Method: Learning and Implementation phase. Ball moves, blue team shifts across. Team, unit and individual pressing, covering and balancing. Try to force longer pass that blue midfielders / defenders can compete to win. Where pass is played to feet, can pressing blue player prevent forward pass or movement.

Coaching Points:

  • Nearest player to ball presses opponent aggressively
  • Adjacent players provide cover and balance, preventing short out-ball
  • Force red players to play backwards or sideways
  • If able to play forward, try force long pass
  • Force the ball to one side
  • If press is broken, recovery runs to get goal-side of ball again
  • Transition to attack by moving the ball forward or retaining possession
