P1: Defensive Corner Set Up

  • When defending a corner, the set up is in a 'Y' shape
  • The GK is just in front of the post (not inside it). GK's body orientation set up depends on whether the corner taker is right or left footed. For a right footer, the GK needs to be square on to the kicker. With a left footer, the GK can be more angled as a left foot is likely to play the ball away from goal.
  • Players 2 & 3 need to be 5 metres from the ball. It's important that Player 2 is not on the goal line but at least 1 metre from the goal line as shown by the yellow/black shading on the court. This is so the GK can deal with the ball if played into the near post.
  • Player 4 is roughly in the middle of the Y
  • Player 5 needs to be in line with the back post as indicated by the Green line
  • Each player needs to be responsible for a player on the opposite team at the corner

  • Each player has a responsibility and it remains player-to-player marking
  • Purple 2 is matched up with White, Purple 3 with White 3 and so on as shown by the red arrows
  • The trigger to move is the moment the ball is kicked and not before.

P3: Defensive Corner Set Up

  • In this instance, the ball is played to W3.
  • P3 get out to press the ball ensuring they are in line with the ball to prevent/block the shot.
  • As W2 stays where they are, P2 stays back to track W2 in case the ball is played back but does not go all the way out there
  • W4 drops deeper and P4 follows and stays central in case W3 passes to W4.
  • W5 pulls out wide so P5 stays back but central so they can deal with W5 if necessary.
