Overlap - Thursday July 26
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Equipment
- Balls, Cones
Organization/Implementation
- Organize grid as shown
- Try to avoid line ups - activity can be run with 6, 8, 10 or 12 players - try to get as many repetitions in as possible
- 1 takes a touch out of her feet and passes the ball to 2 - as the ball is in flight 1 starts her overlapping run
- 2 receives the ball and takes a touch/dribbles inside to create the space for the overlapping player
- It is VITAL to have 2 take her touch inside - this is a non-verbal cue to player 1 that the overlap is on
- It is an important element of our teaching to get players to understand that an inside touch is an indication that an overlap might be on
- 2 then plays the pass to 1 who has made her overlapping run
- 2 stays where she is and 1 dribbles to the end of the line where 1 is
- The activity runs simultaneously from both ends

3 Player Overlap
Equipment
- Balls, Cones
Organization/Implementation
- 6 or more players
- Set up grid as shown
- 1 passes the ball to 2 and begins overlappin run
- When 2 receives the ball she takes a touch inside to create the space for the overlap
- 2 passes the ball inside to 3 and 3 passes the ball to 1 (overlapping player)
- 2 and 3 switch places and get ready for the next ball from 4
The sequence starts again with the ball going from player 4 to 2 etc.
Coaching Points:
- 1 can take a touch and get the ball out of her feet as a cue to 2
- 2 can check away to create space and come back towards the ball
- 2 must take a touch inside - non-verbal cue to 1 and 3 that the overlap is on
- 3 can check away and come back to the ball once they see that 2 takes a touch inside

Mixed Bag
Equipment:
- Balls, Bibs, Cones, 2 goals
Objectives:
- To place field players and goalkeepers in decision-making situations with attacks developed from the wings
Organization:
- Use half a fuled with a 5-10 yard channel each side of the field
- Mark a half-way line, 3v2 and a GK in each half. Offside applies in each half.
- Players must stay in their own half. Wingers are neutral and stay in channel.
- The channelled wingers have no allegiance - they play for both teams (in attack). If there are not enough players then only have a single nautral player in each channel
- When the ball is in the hands of keeper, GK always throws the ball to the flank players
- Wingers can pass to one another, overlap, and cross the ball, can play ball in/out to the three attackers
- Change around the players periodically to give experience in the different roles (except GKs)
Coaching Points:
- GKs must work on accurate throws to wide players
- GKs should be encouraged to "switch" play - catch from one wing, throw to the other
- GKs must communicate their requirements and organize the defence
- Field players should be encouraged to make good attacking runs (near and far post)
- Timing of runs of players is critically important - particularly the near post run
- Defenders need skillful cooperative defending against greater numbers (3v2)
Challenge:
- Outscore the opposition; send in good quality crosses from the flanks

6 Goal Game w/ Overlaps
Equipment
- Balls, Bibs, Cones
Organization/Implementation
- 6 goal game - use nets if possible, if not use cones
- 2 equal teams, 4v4, 5v5, 6v6, 7v7
- The size of the grid will be determined by the amount of players as well as their age and ability
- 2 equal teams play a 6 goal game inside the grid
- The outside/flank zones are free areas - players are not allowed to defend in these areas
- The objective of the game is to try to score points in the outside goals or central goal - the outside/flank goals are worth 3 points, the central goal is worth 1 point
- Attacking players are not permitted to simply stand in the flank area - they must make overlapping runs into these areas via a 2 or 3 player overlap combination
Coaching Points
- Players should look to play "what's on" and not try to manufacture opportunities that don't exist or that are unrealistic
- If the point(s) are available at the central goal then they should take it
- The overlapping player should be moving while the ball is in flight
Progression
- The flank areas are "live" and defenders are allowed to defend in those areas
- Change the scoring system
- If they can dribble the ball and stop the ball on the line in front of the goal or cones then that is worth 5 points - if they pass the ball into the goal or in between the cones then that is worth 3 points

Field Set-Up
Thursday July 26 - Overlap
For tonight I'd like the focus to be on the overlap and movement off the ball - attacking and creating opportunities from wide areas.
