Technical Crossing Practice (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • The players run up the side (10 yards), and 'crosses it' to the player on the other cone (15 - 20 yards)
  • The distance can be adjusted depending on age and skill

Organisation

  • The player who goes last will have no one to cross too so they should aim for the cone.
  • Once all players have reached the other side, repeat going the other way so they have to use their left foot
  • There should be 2-3 players on each cone, anymore set up a second square.
  • Ensure their are balls near every cone to avoid chasing

Crossing and Finishing (Inc. Corners ) (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • This drill focuses on both crossing from open play and corners.
  • The attacks will be quick fire so it is important both attackers and defenders reset quickly
  • Player 1 will play a 1-2 with one of the attackers before putting a cross into the box (the attackers will make runs)
  • Then they will quickly reset and set up for a corner from number 2, and then again from number 3
  • Then they must quickly retreat to their cones and repeat what they did with number 1 with number 4

Organisation

  • If there is a dedicated goalkeeper then use them, if not then it will be more useful to use an extra defender
  • An attacking overload is good at an early stage as it allows the attackers more repetition
  • After playing their pass 1 goes to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4 and 4 to 1.
  • Once every player has played a cross from every position the defenders and attackers should be rotated.

Coaching Points

  • Attacking runs - Can they be switched up to make it harder to be marked, when the ball is being played from deeper can one player check their run and look for a pull back?
  • From corners - Not static when the ball is played in, should be making runs (can we communicate these runs to our teammates first to ensure the same ones aren't being made by multiple players?)
  • The mechanics of the cross are important - Angle of approach, eyes on target, connecting with the bottom of the ball if we want a lofted pass

Crossing and Finishing (incl corners) - Progression (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • There is now a defender that will put pressure on the player putting the ball into the box
  • The focus should remain on the crossing aspect with everything else secondary

Organisation

  • You can have the 'fullback' shuffle across when the ball is not on their side to give even numbers, or you can have him stay out wide to maintain an overload.

SSG - Focus on Crossing (20 mins)

Key Factors

  • SSG with normal set up other than if a goal is scored directly from a cross from the wide channels the teams receive 2 points instead of 1.
  • If there is not enough wide play, can introduce a rule that attacking players can not be tackled in the channel

Organisation

  • A small goal is used here as we have one keeper but two full sized goals can be used.
