Pressing in the Attacking 3rd

Blue team starts in a build out situation.  On the first pass the red player looks to press to win/disrupt the play.  If the red player is able to steal they can transition to the small goal, the blue team is lookin to successfully break the press and score in the mini goal.  Play 3 minutes then switch the two defenders each time.

Coaching Points

  • Show me how you are approaching the player on the ball
  • Do you want to force the play to the middle or make the scenario a 1v1?
  • How close do you want to get to the player on the ball? How can you impact the play.
Progressions
  • Make the game a 3v2 situation and reduce the play to 2 minutes before swapping.

3v3 - High Pressing (20 mins)

This exercise starts with a 3v3. Teams play for 2 minutes total.  If ball goes out of play the team has to pass in.  Each team gets one point for every goal they score, as there are three goals, there will need to be constant pressure on the ball so the intensity for this exercise should be high. After 2 minutes rotate the players out and keep score for each mini game.

Coaching Points.

  • Player on the ball should have no time and space to get their head up
  • Ensure that the ball is being impacted at all times
  • 2nd and third defender should be reading the initial press and squeezing the play
Progressions
  • Each goal is now worth 3 points, and as soon as a goal is scored there is an immediate switch of a new team, who can dribble or pass onto the field.  Team that just scored must be ready to press straight away to stop the new team from having an easy attack.

Conditioned Game (20 mins)

End Game

Teams play a 4v4 game.  As soon as a goal is scored the opportunity to counter attack is on, the team that conceeded gets off the field, the goal that was just scored on the player with the ball can quickly look to counter attack by dribbling or passing on.  There is no offsides so the player at the opposite end will be able to receive a pass straight away. Teams keep their overall score 1 point per goal.

Coaching Points

  • Quick attacking transition
  • Spark the attack with a pass or dribble straight away
  • Look to create scoring opportunities as quickly as possible, emphasis on goals.
Progressions
  • If the team who just comes on scores within 10 seconds they get 3 points to their tally instead of 1.
