Before Practice Station Training (15 mins)

Different Stations for when the athletes arrive

Station A: (10 x 15)

Pair Juggling and control pass in the air or on the ground

1 player tosses the ball while the other passes back in the air or juggles and sends back a controlled pass

  • Right Inside Foot
  • Left Inside Foot
  • Right laces
  • Left laces
  • Thigh and pass
  • Chest and pass
  • Anything goes
  • Header (Optional)
  • Finish with 1 touch and 2 touch passes (R & L)

Station B: (15x15)

Rondo 4v2

A regular game of Rondo where the Blue team is keeping the ball away from the purple team.

If the Blue team kicks the ball out of bounce, the purple defence switches players 

If the Purple team intercepts the ball, 2 Blue players switch and are now on Defence

Warm up with Ladder/Brazilian Exercises and passing (10 mins)

Quick Passes of 5 yards on the ground followed by Quick sprints to the next spot

1. 2 touches (Right foot / Left foot)

2. 1 touch (Right foot / Left foot)

3. 3 passes (Right foot / Left foot)

4. Chest to foot pass

5. Thigh to foot pass

etc.

Instructions:

Once Player C's have passed to each other they sprint diagonal

Once Player B and A have passed to each other, Player A does ladder training to the back of line C and B takes over A's spot

Every 2 minutes, the warm-up is stopped for a 30 second stretch and then start up again

Should never have a break in the play

Ladder Training:

Side Step, Two feet two feet out, 1 in 1 out, forward backward

5v3 + 2 (20 mins)

5v3 + 2 Supports

The objective of the Drill:

  • To move the ball quickly from one end to the other using the supports at each end
  • Once you have made 3 passes on one side, you can play the ball forward to the other zone 
  • Once the pass has gone through, the purple team must have two supports follow the play and 1 blue defender can enter the zone to create a 3v2 +1

Coaching points:

Scanning the field off of the ball

Movement off the ball as a support option to the ball carrier

Make sure that your supporting angles are different from that of the ball carrier 

Progressions:

  • 5 full passes before you can progress into the opposite zone
  • Must use the Yellow supporting player before you can progress the ball into the other zone
  • Have the Yellow supporting player make an overlapping run to receive the ball on the wing and 1 or 2 touches it into the other zone (Once he has made his run, he joins in with the team who has possession of the ball until he can get replaced by a trailing player and get back to his side)

If the overlapping player can 1 touch it to the other Yellow support player behind the red line (1pt)

Support the play by creating space (Red Circles)

  • Moving away from the defender - Drawing them away in order to create space for a teammate 

Support the play by changing your angle (Blue Lines)

  • Not on the same line as another in relation to the ball and the opponent

Support the play by creating triangles  (Green Lines)


Support through Runs off the ball (Blackline)

  • An overlap

Player 1 passes the ball to Player 2

Before the pass, Player 2 must draw the defender to area 1 followed by quick support back towards player 1

As Player 2 reaches area 1 and comes back to support, the ball is passed (Timing of run & pass important)

Player 2 receives the ball side-on with the front foot, and body open to see the field

Player 2 passes the ball after a 2 touch to player 3

***Each player follows their pass and the combination continues***

Coaching Points: 

1. Draw the defender (Different tempo of run)

2. Support the player with the ball by coming back towards the ball 

3. Scan the field and over your shoulder

4. Open up body upon reception to play the ball forward

Player 1 passes the ball to Player 2

Before the pass, Player 2 must draw the defender to the area 1 followed by quick support to player 1 in area 2

As Player 2 reaches area 1 and comes back to support, the ball is passed (Timing of run & pass important)

Player 2 receives the ball side-on with the front foot, and body open to see the field

As soon as player arrives in area 2, player 1 changes their angle and run diagonal to the middle

Player 2 passes the ball after a 1 or 2 touch to player 1

Once Player 2 has passed the ball to player 1 who is supporting the play, he/she must sprint around the cone and turn inside towards area 5.

Coaching Points:

  • Draw the defender (Different tempo of run)
  • Support the player with the ball by creating space 
  • Timing is important as it can offset the defence
  • Open up body upon reception to play the ball forward

Player 1 passes the ball to Player 2

Player 2  moves into the middle of the field and provides player 3 with a 2 touch pass

Player 2 then drops in behind player 3 to support him/her

Player 3 receives the ball with an open body to see the whole field and 2-touches the pass back to player 2

As player 2 is receiving the ball from the player with an open body to move forward, Player 1 is making an overlapping run around the post.  

Player 2 passes the ball to player 1 who 1 touches the pass to player 4

(Rotation: Player 1 to player 2, Player 2 to Player 3, and player 3 to the back of the line of player 4)

The ball can only go into the attacking ends if the middle section of the field has seen supporting play that we have worked on in the session:

  • Support pass back to either a defender or supporting mid
  • Allow for a give-n-go type of passing combination
  • An overlapping run by either a defender or a midfielder
In the attacking zone: you are allowed up to 3 attackersIn the defensive zone: you are allowed up to 2 defenders

Progressions:
  • You have to make a pass back to a supporter before being able to score
  • 2 pts for a goal if an overlap support play is involved
