Football/Soccer Session (Moderate): Shooting from distance

Warm-up (version 1) (10 mins)

Activity:

Coaching Points: When shooting from distance are shooters getting power with lace, or finesse with curled shots into corners. Ability to be technically sharp with planting foot beside ball pointing to target, and be able to follow through with shooting foot.

Activity (30 mins)

Organisation:  Set area approx width of penalty area (smaller if less players) and depth about 15 yards.  Approx 10-14 players.

Activity:  One player acts as CDM or CB and retrieves ball from top of area and brings it into play.  Play is live 6 attackers v4 defenders, plus a GK.  Objectives is for attackers to score on GK from outside penalty area.  Once ball goes out of area of play, whether a goal, out of bounds or shot off target, the CDM/CB retrieves another ball on the fly.  Play until set number of balls are exhausted.  Then switch attackers/defender rolls.  If defenders win ball, them may score in small nets at edge of area of play.

Coaching Points:

Attackers - can they move ball around quickly to find open player for shot.  Can players move into open pockets, and find shoot lanes to get a shot on goal.  When shooting from distance are shooters getting power with lace, or finesse with curled shots into corners.  Ability to be technically sharp with planting foot beside ball pointing to target, and be able to follow through with shooting foot.

Defenders - are they able to anticipate and mark potential shooters.  Can they close in quickly to take away shooting lane and/or block shot.  Moving in tandem with other defenders to block passing and/or shooting lanes and or long switch.
