Passing Through the Zones in Pairs (25 mins)

Key Factors

  • Working in pairs the players must move the ball through all 4 zones
  • Both players MUST touch the ball in each zone (no dribbling)
  • Each zone should be 15 yards wide and 5 yards long, feel free to use more than 4 zones if space permits

Organisation

  • All pairs will be in the same square, so they must be aware of each other as well as keeping their eye on their own ball
  • If there is an odd number, one team can play in 3's (same rules)
  • Once they make it to the end, they should work their way back, keep going back and forth until the coach calls stop

Possible Progressions

  • Progress into a race, the first pair back to the start wins
  • 1 or 2 touch only
  • Weaker foot only
  • Turn one pair into defenders - every time a pair gets a back to the start without being tackled they get one point, every time the defenders tackle them they get 1 point.

Coaching Points

  • Mechanics - Look at target, Eye on ball, Angle of approach, Non-kicking foot alongside ball in a comfortable position, Strike Centre of ball with inside of foot, Firm ankle, Follow through towards target
  • Pass and move - Don't stand still once your pass is made, move into position to receive the next one
  • Positive first touch - We know we want to move forwards so use our first touch to make sure we're facing the right way
