Transition Rondo (15 mins)
Practice Explanation: 6X3MINS 30SEC REST
This transition rondo game sees two teams of eight starting in separate boxes at either end of a larger area.
• On the coach’s whistle, two players from the defending team (Blue ) should enter the opposite box as the ball is being played into the in-possession Red team.
• The team in possession must complete as many consecutive passes as possible, After every five successful passes, the pressing team can send in an extra player to help their attempts to regain possession.
• Team Blue should attempt to steal the ball back and transfer it back into their own box. They will then turn into the in-possession team, and two Team
Red players should transfer into the opposite box to press.
• If the team in possession misplaces a pass and the ball leaves the working area, they will then turn into the pressing team and the ball will be played into the opposite area by the coach.• Teams should attempt to make the highest number of consecutive passes within the working block to win a point.• Each working block lasts 90 seconds• If players are finding success in the previous working blocks, the coach can introduce a one-touch condition for the possession team.
Coaching Point:
IN POSSESION: PLAYER MOVEMENT
• Ensure players are constantly moving to create new passing angles to improve their chances of keeping possession.PASS DETAIL• Challenge players to pass and receive with good detail. Emphasise the importance of weight/accuracy of pass and quality of first touch.
DICTATING THE BALL SPEED
• Players should be looking to move the ball quickly in order to prevent the opposition getting near the ball.
• At times, players may have the chance to take more time on the ball, to draw defenders in before playing around them.
OUT OF POSSESSION
PRESS AGGRESSIVELY
• The coach should encourage the defending team to press aggressively in order to regain possession.
RECOVERY RUNS
• If the pressing team manages to steal the ball and transfer back into their own area, players pressing must ensure they recover back into their positions as quickly as possible.
