PEM: Passing Pattern (20 mins)

Organization/Setup:

  • 15x15 yards square.
  • 2 midfielders in red (#6)
  • 8 or more players in green receiving/passing in the corners.

Sub-Principles:

- Triangle Support

- Half Turn Receiving

- Shift Opponent

Counter-Principle:

Compact Pressing.

Instructions/Achievement Criteria:

Objective: Improve the team's ability to find, connect and combine with the #6.

  • Green plays the central midfielder (red) and move to receive into the space (give and go).
  • Central players play one touch and move to receive on the other gate.
  • Everybody rotates the same way.
  • Players receiving the ball in the corners play 2 touches (receive back foot), everyone else plays one touch.

Coaching Points/Questions

  • Timing of runs.
  • Create angles of support (mobility).

  • Passing accuracy.
  • Body posture to receive the ball (open hips).
  • Scan the field, look over shoulders before receiving the ball (vision).
  • Vary the types of runs to receive the ball.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Play in the opposite direction.
  • Rotate players in the middle.
  • Increase the speed of play.

PTDM: Possession (25 mins)

Organization/Setup:

  • 20 x 20 yards area.
  • 9 players, 3 teams (different colors).
  • 2 teams in possession play among themselves, 2 players outside the box and one inside (both teams).
  • Defending team plays inside the square, if they recover the ball, the team that lost the ball goes inside the square to defend (switch).
  • Bumper to bumper play is allowed.
  • Defending team can not step out of the square.
  • Defending team scores on mini-goals after recovering the ball.

- Triangle Support

- Half Turn Receiving

- Shift Opponent

Counter-Principle:

Compact Pressing.


Instructions/Achievement Criteria:

Objective: Improve the team's ability to find, connect and combine with the #6.

  • Defending team gets a point by scoring on mini goals.
  • Defending team switches to the attack after scoring (rotate).
  • Team that loses possession before a goal was scored plays defense (middle).

Coaching Points/Questions:

In Possession:

  • Clear passing lines.
  • Support.
  • Communicate.
  • Break lines.
  • Try to play forward.
  • Scan the field before receiving the ball.
  • Can we play the ball early? (Play one touch or two touches if possible).

  • Out of Possession:
  • ASET (All Sprint Engage Trust).
  • - Make it compact.
  • - Keep it compact.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • If center midfielders combine and play forward successfully, defending team has to win the ball/score twice.

  • If bumpers play back-and-forth through the middle, defending team has to win the ball/score twice.

PSAM: Combination Play (25 mins)

Organization/Setup:

  • 25 yards long x 15 yards wide field with a 4 yards neutral zone in the middle.
  • 6v3 (4v2 in one box).
  • Central player in blue moves free to combine inside the box and must receive the ball inside the neutral zone to move forward.
  • Both outside players in blue and 1 defender (red) will join the other box when the ball is played there to form a 4v2 again.

Sub-Principles:

- Triangle Support

- Half Turn Receiving

- Shift Opponent

Counter-Principle:

Compact Pressing.


Instructions/Achievement Criteria:

Objective: Improve the team's ability to find, connect and combine with the #6.

  • Combination play to find the #6 in the central area (marked zone).
  • Outside players join the attack on the opposite side of the field.
  • Score on mini goals after transitioning onto the other half of the field.
  • Defending team scores on mini-goals after recovering the ball.

Coaching Points/Questions:

In Possession:

  • Utilize space and triangulate to create passing options.
  • Spread out.
  • Support.
  • Vary the types of runs to try and get behind/between the defensive line.
  • Out of Possession:
  • ASET (All Sprint Engage Trust).
  • - Make it compact.
  • - Keep it compact.

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Let the other central player in blue drop to receive inside the neutral zone and to then move forward.

  • Neutral player #6 moves inside the miiddle zone (marked).
  • Neutral player #6 can not score.
