Org.: 10Wx20L, 3 fields of players (or 2 depending on numbers
Obj.: Players apply technical defending to the exercise and team with most defending points moves up or down a field
Prog.: 1. 2 points if defender wins the ball in opponent half and scores
Coach Pts./Ques.:
Layer 1: Closing down quickly - gear down into stance
Layer 2: Show them one way - force the decision
Layer 3: Choose the right moment to tackle - bad touch or after the move
Layer 4: Look over your shoulders (2v2)
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Org.: 16Wx25L, 2 teams w/ 1 GK
Obj.: Play starts with pass to static attacker. When attacker receives the pass, 1st defender becomes live and attempts to delay the attack, while 2nd defender (top) tries to recover. If defenders win the ball, look to pass to mini goal
Prog.: 1. Add offsides line; 2. Add recovering defenders
Coach Pts./Ques.:
1st Defender:
- Pressure the ball immediately to slow the attack (brings up he offsides line); Force them in one direction to cut off supporting players (allows time & gives direction to the 2nd defender as to where to help out)
2nd Defender:
- Recover straight back into danger area (get behind the ball & first defender); Close enough to first defender that would be able to deal with the 1st defender getting beat

Warm-Up: 1v1 Defending (10 mins)
Org.: Players in pairs of 2 using the entire half of the field (width)
Obj.: Players work in pairs on technical aspect of defending
Prog.: 1. Moments of when to poke the ball away, cont. 2: 1v1 across the field, beat the player and stop. Win the ball and give it back.
Coach Pts./Ques.:
- Defending is winning the ball back before we can score a goal
Layer1: Low stance for muscle load, quick feet
Layer 2: Distance to player
Layer 3: Force him to a side to force the decision
Layer 4: When to poke/block - attacker mistake (heavy touch, wait for the move)
