Dribbling Activation

Method:

  • One player jogs then the other player dribbles behind them
  • Do it for 30 seconds then change

Coaching Points:

  • Players have to keep their head up so they don't crash into other players
  • Can dribbling player keep close to player jogging

Warm Up

Method:

Work in 2's. Serves = volleys, knees, headers, chest & control. Can add in passes (1 & 2 touch), side foot etc.

Once volley back, run around server. Do this 3 times & change (can increase depending on how hard want to work)

Coaching Points:

  • Does player have control of ball. Good weight & accuracy of passes back. Use laces/side of foot. Using forehead not top of head. Get knees nice & high. Can they cushion on chest, control & pass back. 
  • Server needs to have accurate throw.

Strength Work & Ball Protection

Method:

Players work in 2's

Different types of strength work;

  • Ball between 2, one person has hands on side, other has hands on top. Pull!!!
  • Bums/backs - pushing against each other
  • Shoulders - pushing against each other (change sides so they are working both shoulders)
  • Ball between 2. One has to try keep ball from the other

Coaching Points:

  • Player with ball should have 'side on' body shape, keeping ball on opposite side of player
  • Use arm to push player away
  • As opposition player tries to get ball, player with ball moves their body
  • Keep body between ball and attacker!!

Y Passing Drill

Method:

  • A pass to B, then follow the pass
  • B moves off cone and controls with back foot, then pass to C, then follow pass
  • C dribbles back to start
  • Next set A passes to B, then B passes to D
Progression:1-2 passes1 touch passes


Coaching Points:

  • Open body shape
  • Movement away from cone
  • Control using back foot
  • Good weight and accuracy of pass
  • Communication - Verbal & Non-Verbal

    Method:

    • A pass to B & follows pass
    • B pass to C & follow pass
    • C pass to D & follow pass
    • D pass to E & follow pass
    • E pass to F & follow Pass
    • F shoots!
    Progression 1: Change to E shoots instead of G. Can players use both feet to shoot?

    Progression 2:
    1-2 passes at each cone. Player plays ball in front of other player - do 1 touch if possible!

    Possession - 5 v 3

    Method:

    • 5 v 3 Possession
    • 5 x Green players must keep possession. If they get 5 x passes = 1 goal. If Red players win ball back and dribble outside area = 1 goal
    • Play for 2 mins (or longer if required), keep score
    • Change players in the middle

    Coaching Points:

    • Green players must use 'Width & Depth' to create SPACE
    • Good communication: verbal (e.g. calling names) & nonverbal (e.g. hand signals for where they want the ball or where they want a player to move to)
    • Can Red players work as a team when closing down, staying connected
