Description

What:

  • Teaching players how to pass and receive the ball with the inside of their foot along with player movement to create combination play

Where:

  • Any Third

Who:

  • All Position Players

When:

  • Any position player receiving the ball to make a pass to another teammate

Why:

  • Technical session - we are focused on improving accuracy in finding feet when making passes. We want to work on two-touch passing techniques, including a strong emphasis of backfoot receive

Pre-Warm Up

Organization:

  • Players at each end, 15 yards apart
  • Create two sets of lines

Instructions:

  • Each player makes a pass, receives, and passes back
  • Once pass is made, jog back to the end of the opposite end of the line
  • Do this for 5 minutes as a simple pre-warm up

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Players must receive the ball with the inside of their foot, then pass back
  • Ensure all players do two-touch
  • NO one-touch

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Progression - after the first round, ask the players to pass with the opposite foot they received with. So for example, if you receive with your right foot, pass with your left. And vice verse

Warm Up

Organization:

  • Create a 30 by 30 yard playing area that is suited for about 10 players
  • Setup mini goals at the middle of each side of the playing area
  • Increase the playing area if more players enter the game as a square

Instructions:

  • Players are in pairs
  • Two touch passing between the pair of players
  • Each pair progresses to score at a mini goal
  • Once the mini goal is scored on, each pair finds a new mini goal to score on
  • Do this for 10 minutes as a warm-up

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Players must receive the ball with the inside of their foot, then pass back
  • Ensure all players do two-touch to start the game
  • NO dribbling

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Progression - one touch passing
  • Regression - allow an extra touch, i.e., three touches per player per pair

Main Activity

Organization:

  • 50 by 30 play area with two goals
  • Setup two cones on each side which are about 10 yards from goal
  • Main area should be a 30 by 30 yard box

Instructions:

  • 3 players per side
  • Each side starts with the ball from one end of the goal
  • Two touch passing to reach the other end of the goal
  • 5 Passes minimum 
  • Once goal is shot on, the next 3 players on the other repeat the exercise
  • 45 minute exercise

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Ensure same techniques applied - receive and pass with inside foot
  • Allow the middle player to incorporate backfoot receive to switch the side of the field
  • Ensure all players pass at feet while moving forward. Slow down to receive, head up, make accurate pass with inside foot while other players are moving

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Progression (choose any or combination of):
    • Have players make overlapping runs while progressing down the field
    • One touch passing
    • Allow the awaiting team to have the middle player as a goalie to increase difficulty of the shot
  • Regression - allow an extra touch (third touch) to ensure accurate pass for those that struggle individually

Conditioned Game

Organization:

  • 50 by 30 play area with two goals

Instructions:

  • 3v3 game at 3 minute intervals
  • Two touch passing game between each team
  • First goal wins or when 3 minutes expire
  • Switch to new teams and repeat
  • NOTE - no goalie, but players can defend their goal (can't use hands)
  • 30 minute exercise

Coaching Points/Questions:

  • Ensure same techniques applied - receive and pass with inside foot
  • Allow the middle player to incorporate backfoot receive to switch the side of the field
  • Ensure all players pass at feet while moving forward. Slow down to receive, head up, make accurate pass with inside foot while other players are moving

Regressions/Progressions:

  • Regression - allow for three touches
  • Progression - allow one touch passes
