Playing Forward at Pace - Opposed
Equipment: Cones, Footballs, Bibs, Goals.
Cones: 25 x 25 yard grid with 2 cones place 10 yards behind the attackers cones.
3 attackers vs 2 defenders + goalkeeper; with 1 supporting attacker and 1 supporting defender.
This activity is designed to identify the benefits of attacking at pace and gives the players many decisions to make; where and when to make runs; to pass, dribble or shoot, etc. This activity also develops the defending skills of players; engaging attackers early, work as a unit and delay the attackers.
The defenders (reds) next to the goal are to play a long pass to the attackers (blues). Once they have played this pass, they begin to pressurise the attackers. On the first touch of the attacker receiving the pass, the attackers can move into the attacking zone. Also on the attackers first touch, the supporting runners start their runs to join in.
Rotate defenders and attackers.

Playing Forward at Pace - SSG
Equipment: Cones, Bibs, Footballs, Goals.
Cones: 40 x 30 yard grid.
8 vs 8 with goalkeepers: set up in a 2-3-2 formation.
This SSG is aiming to encourage players to play the ball forward at pace. This is true for both the attacking and defending teams; the attacking team in an attempt to score a goal, but once the defending team have possession, they are encouraged to play on the counter. The condition put on this game should help give the defence the incentive to play on the counter.
Conditions:
All of the outfield players a team must be in the attacking half of the pitch to score a goal. This will create space for the defending team, if they regain possession of the ball.
- If this isn't achieving the desired affect; use the blue cones and change the condition too 'Every player must be in the attacking third (marked by the blue cones) to score a goal'.

Playing Forward at Pace - Unopposed
Playing Forward at Pace - Unopposed
Equipment: Cones, Bibs, Footballs.
Cones: 25 x 25 yard grid with 12 x 6 yard attached areas on each side.
4 teams of 3 players in the middle of the grid in different coloured bibs, with 1 player in each attached area.
This activity introduces players to the concept of receiving the ball on the move with the intention to play forward. Each team has a ball. They must pass the ball amongst themselves in order to work across the grid to the other end player; teams work multi directionally (as shown; blues & reds use the same wide men, and yellows and blacks use the same wide men). Once a team has played in to a wide man, they are to receive the ball back and begin to attack the opposite wide man again.
Conditions:
- Every player must touch the ball before the ball is played out to a wide player.
Optional Conditions:
- 2 or 3 touch maximum
- Competition: How many times can you work your way across the grid as a team (the most passes to a wide man, wins).
