Passing to play forward 2007B Pool
Objectives:
- Have players focus on cues to see when to play forward/play through (space behind split, movement of defenders and/or attackers)
- Have players position themselves in a clear passing lane to receive when off the ball
- Have players position themselves to take a first touch/play forward when possible
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Using 2 areas, play 5v5 or 6v6. Adjust as needed based on numbers. 18 Minutes
- One team plays north south, one team east west
- One ball, coach with more to feed in to keep the game moving
- Can score by connecting the target players, or connecting 7 passes
- Once a player plays into the target, they switch spots (target comes inside with the ball)
- Play first team to 7 points wins (at least 4 minutes before stopping the game)
Coaching points:
- How can you move to provide a clear passing option in space to support the ball?
- How can you position yourself to receive the ball and take your first touch forward?
- What do you see that tells you to play forward? (Space behind, clear pass to target, movement of defender)
- Attract with possession, exploit the space (Draw pressure to break a line)
Progression:
- When ball is lost, defending team can have their target players tuck in to help defend (if needed for success winning back ball)
- Add pugg goals to the corners (as shown). Once a team connects both targets and completes a split, they can score in any of the 4 goals
- Teams can score in any two goals of color indicated by coach (have bibs to mark goals/use different color goals

Scan, Decide, Action
18 minutes
Ball starts with coach playing into GK of attacking team. Teams then play 4v4 until goal or ball goes into touch. Mix groups/teams with both red and navy players. Winning team stays on unless they score 3x in a row.
Coaching points:
- 1st attacker: Scan multiple times before first touch to know movements of teammates/opponents/space
-1st attacker: What do you see that tells you to play forward? (space, movement of defenders, movement of supporting players)
- 2nd and 3rd attacker: Find the space! Move into it!
- Movement/dribble direction of player with the ball to open space for runs off ball (change lanes!)
- Runs trigger runs (one player leaves a space, another player takes the space)
Progressions:
- If a team splits an opponent before scoring, goal is worth 2
