Positional exercise (15 mins)

SET UP

Create a pitch 25 x 30m with a mini goal and two gates at one end.

Place extra balls at the opposite end and play 4 v 3.

HOW TO PLAY

The team of 4 score into the mini goal or by dribbling through either gate. The team of 3 score by dribbling over the line they're attacking (can use coach/neutral for a one touch bounce pass). If the ball

goes out of play the game restarts from the coach/neutral who passes to the team of 4.

Change the defenders every 2 mins.

PROGRESSION

Add a 10m retreating line if needed.

PLAYER TASKS

- Can you set up in a diamond formation?

- If CM drops in, can FB's get high?

- When you are in possession, can you split to make the pitch big?

- Can you receive facing forwards or bounce the ball to someone who can?

- Can you either come short or go long to create space to receive?

- If a team mate drives inside can you move outside and vice versa?

Game training (25 mins)

Set Up

Use half of a field with a width long end zone after the half way line.

How to play

- Blue aim to play to players in the end zone (#7/11). GK must play to CB to start with (use this time to make sure movement of team mates is good). Once happy, GK can play longer if needed.

- Red aim to win ball and score as quickly as possible

- Red defenders (locked in) in end zone must play on the same side of the field when defending like a FB and CB (not two FB's)

- All football rules apply except no corners (start from GK)

Player tasks

#1

- Start central so it's not obvious which way you're going to play.

- Can you support your team mates by being a passing option?

- If the ball is played back from one side, can you quickly switch out the other side?

#3&4

- Can you start outside the box so length of the 18 yard box is in front of you? (shown in diagram)

- If opposition press really high, can you be brave and drop even deeper to pick up the ball?

- Can you find the furthest forward pass whenever possible?

- Can you be in a position where you can always be passed to with time and space?

- Can you miss out players to quickly switch the ball?

#2&5

- Can you start high and wide to create room for CB?

- Can you look to play the furthest forward pass quickly?

- If CB/CM has time on the ball, can you receive beyond your marker?

- If CB/CM has the ball under pressure, you might have to come short to receive into feet.

- When ball is on opposite side, tuck in slightly in case play breaks down.

#6

- When the ball is played to the CB, drop in deep between the CB's (like a back 3) to release FB's.

- Look to play forward quickly, playing through/over defensive lines when possible.

- If play breaks down and FB's are out of position, act as a CB. If FB's recover, screen ball into opposition striker.

#8/10

- When the ball is played to CB on your side of the pitch, can you come out the side of the box?

- When the ball is played to opposite side, play high between mid and def line.

- Can you get on the ball fcing forward? If not, can you link up with someone who can?

Training Game (20 mins)

Set Up

Use 3/4 field with a goal at either end.

Blue (team being coached) play a 1-4-3-1

Red play 1-2-3-3

How to play

All normal football rules apply except no corners - ball to start with GK whose team won the corner.

Incentives

If red win the ball in opposition half (defined by poles/discs) and score it's worth 3 goals

If blue score by playing out of the back without the opposition getting possession of the ball it's worth 3 goals.

All other goals are worth 1 goal.
