Working with Blues setup in a 1-3-3-1 Formation
Managing Reds setup in a 1-3-3-1 Formation
Half pitch + 10-15m length. Full width
Ball starts with either GK (this instance Blues)
Play out same way as Function. To any Blue and try to score.
If Reds are in possession, they have 20s to score.
If Blues score with a FB overlap involved in the phase of play = 2 Goals
Normal Blues goal = 1 Goal
If Reds score within 20s = 1 Goal
Coaching Points
In addition to Function CPs.
Team shape and direction of play needs to dictate and influence opposition shape/setup/organisation so to create a situation of an overlap or attacking overload.
Patience to play for the oppourtune moment, don't rush and snatch chances if unit/team is not properly setup for it.
Recovery potential and counter shape when overlap taking place leads to a loss of possession transition; opposite winger and full backs tuck in and narrow off. This allows central players to move across to the side of the overlap to both offer support with and without the ball.
End product from the fullback in advanced position; cross, shot or pass.
Decision making; when or should I go? what is my run going to be? Why am I overlapping?
Progression(s)
Introduce offside line either set by the coach (cone or flag) or by defending team.
Increased time period for opposition to break and score
Regression(s)
Introduce an additional Blue player (ST or CM) to produce a natural overload

7v7
Working with Blues (Attackers) setup in a 0-3-3-1
Manage Reds (Defenders) setup in a 1-2-3-1
Server (Black)
Half pitch with two mini goals on half way line
Ball played into Blue CB. Try to score into goal. Play through fullbacks and coach principles.
Reds if gain possession, 15 seconds to score into either of the two mini goals.
When ball goes dead, play always starts back with server on half way.
Coaching Points
Manipulate the ball out to one side where there is an attacking overload as small as a 2v1. This may encorporate a purpose play of switching the ball quickly and attacking when opposition is unbalanced.
Recognition of where the following are; football, team mates, opposition and space.
Needs to provide an extra option for a team mate rather than occupying/blocking a passing option/line of the winger.
Supportive starting position; aniticapte to overlap, be within the vicinity of winger rather to provide quick option/overlap rather than being a delay on play when travelling from a distance
Informative and effective commuication (primarily with winger) tuck in, go away, play etc.
High tempo
Purpose, decisivness and incisiveness to the run - mean it.
Courage to get forward and join in with the attack
Consider defensive requirements; is there cover if I go? where is the opposition winger? If we lose the ball, where is my recovery run?
If overlap is on, demand the ball to make that 2v1 overload count
When receiving, open up and drive into the space created.
Exploit
End product of that advanced full back; cross, shot or pass.
Possible Plays
1. Winger tucks inside and creates space for fullback to go on the outside
2. Full back go past winger if CM has ball for diagonal ball into space
3. ST holding ball up, winger tucked inside with CM for central support, fullback fill wide man role
Progression(s)
Add in extra Red defender and make it a back 3 (provides opposing fullbacks) meaning Blues have to work smarter and harder to create an overlap and overload scenario
Longer time limit for Reds to score
Server plays into any of the Blue players (provides varying starting points). Could play straight into a fullback.
Introduce offside rule set either by the coach (via cones/flags) or defending team
Regression(s)
Set half way point with cones/flags. Passive pressure until half way point
