Description

Session topic: Turning

Learning objectives: - Be able to perform different types of turns with the ball. - Be able to turn quickly into space.

Player information: - 12 players - 5-11 years old- Mixed ability

Session length: 1 hour

Order of practices: Blocked, Variable, Random (SSG).

Equipment: - 12 balls - 12 bibs (2 different colours) - Cones/markers - 2 goals or poles

5 corners:

- Technical: know the space you are going to turn into, always turn away from the defender, use different types of turn depending on the situation, receive the ball on the back foot to be ready to turn instantly. - Tactical: give players the opportunity to have team discussions in between match intervals for the SSG. This allows them to discuss different tactics in order to win the game. - Physical: area sizes were kept quite small throughout the session, this is because we want to promote quick turning whilst keeping the ball under control so giving the players less space to do this in will help improve this better. Area sizes can always be adapted to the players' needs throughout the session. - Psychological: challenges and targets are set for the players throughout the session for all the players involved. Can also let the players set their own challenges which will give them extra motivation to achieve these. Give the players the ownership to create their own rules and conditions for different practices e.g. SSG. - Social: team meetings to be held in between match intervals during the SSG. Can also introduce team captains to lead these meetings.

Blocked (15 mins) (15 mins)

Organisation:

- 15 minute practice.

- 12 players (5-11 years old) but can work for more or less.

- 30 x 25 yard area.

- Cones scattered across the area as obstacles.

- Every player has a ball each.

Equipment:

- 12 balls.

- 12 bibs (6 red, 6 blue).

- Cones/markers to mark area and scatter across the inside of the area.

Description:

- Players all have a ball each, their task is to dribble around the area avoiding the cones and other players.

- When approaching another player or a cone with the ball, the player must perform a quick turn to then dribble away quickly in a different direction.

Progressions/ Regressions:

- One possible regression would be to take away the scattered cones so then the players only have to worry about turning away from another player.

- Can also take away the balls for a short period of time to make it easier, this will get across to the players the fundamental movements of turning away from a player and sprinting into a different space.

- To progress the practice you can introduce different types of turns to the players, or ask the players to show the rest of the group a different type of turn to give them ownership. This will then encourage the players to become more creative without being under pressure.

Conditions:

- Within 1 minute, every turn a player performs must be a different type of turn.

Challenges:

- Challenge the players, especially the more skillful ones, to use both feet more often when performing a turn.

- Challenge the players to start dribbling and turning at a match tempo despite not quite having any pressure.

Targets:

- Can you perform 6-8 different turns within a minute? Let the players decide on realistic targets for themselves to achieve.

Coaching points:

- Dribble with the ball close to your feet, keeping the ball under control.

- Before performing a turn, make sure you know the space you are going to turn into.

- Always turn away from the defender.

- Use different types of turns depending on the situation, for example, a "cruyff turn" may be used to turn in the opposite directon.

Coaching interventions:

- Fly-by: Give players quick reminders and tips on how to perform the turning technique.

- Drive-by: If certain players are struggling, pull them out to give them a slow motion demonstration on different types of turns they can perform in the area along with a detailed explanation. Allow them to rehearse and then show you at match speed inside the area. Give them praise after signs of improvement.

- Coaching process: This process can be used in between progressions just to demonstrate to all the players the turning technique (if they are struggling). Give feedback and ask the players questions to consolidate understanding of what they are supposed to do.

Variable (10 mins) (10 mins)

Organisation:

- 10 minute practice.

- 12 players (5-11 years old).

- 3 sets of cones set up vertically as shown in the session diagram.

- An attacker and defender in the middle of each area with two feeders on each side next to the cones.

- Cones should be 20 yards away from each other.

Equipment:

- Cones/markers.

- 3 balls (one for each group).

- Extra balls scattered along the outside of the area.

- Bibs

Description:

- Players split up into groups of 4. One player should stand on each of the cones with an attacker and defender in between the two.

- One of the players on the cones passes the ball to the attacker when he must receive and perform a turn to get past the defender before passing to the other player on the cone.

- To start with the defender is passive and so he/she is just putting little pressure on the attacker without tackling.

Progressions:

- Players must perform a piece of skill to turn past the defender.

- Defenders are now allowed to tackle the attacker when receiving the ball, forcing the attacker to become more creative whe trying to turn the defender.

Challenges:

- Challenge the players to see how many different types of turns they can perform to get past the defender.

- Can you turn past the defender using one or two touches only?

Targets:

- Can you turn past the defender 3 times once he is no longer passive?

Coaching points:

- When receiving the ball, receive on the back foot so you are ready to turn with the ball instantly.

- Receive the ball from an angle so you know where the defender is. Body shape also makes it easier to turn with the ball.

- Use different pieces of skill to turn past the defender (drop the shoulder?).

Variable 2 (15 mins) (15 mins)

Organisation:

- 15 minute practice.

- 12 players (5-11 years old)

- 20 x 20 yard area with a smaller 10 x 10 yard area on the inside as shown by the session diagram.

- 4 players inside the area, 8 players on the outside of the area.

Equipment:

- Cones/markers.

- Bibs (6 blue, 6 red).

- 4 balls with others scattered across the outside of the area.

Description:

- Players are scattered outside the area with two players from each team in the inside area.

- The players in the inside area should receive the ball from the outside, perform a turn and then pass the ball to another teammate on the outside.

Progressions:

- Can progress to where the player can only use 3-4 touches to perform the 3 stages (receive, turn, pass).

- Ask the players on the outside to start moving around the outsdie. This then forces the players on the inside to look up and find the right player on their team. This will also encourage more communication between the players.

- Can make the areas smaller as this will make it more difficult for the players on the inside to turn, the have less space to turn into.

Conditions:

- 3 touches to perform the 3 stages required (receive, turn, pass).

Challenges:

- Can you receive, turn and pass at a match tempo?

- How many different types of turns can you perform?

Targets:

- Can you turn and pass to 4 different players within a minute? Ask the layers to give themselves a realistic target to achieve within a minute.

SSG (20 mins) (20 mins)

Organisation:

- 20 minute practice.

- 12 players (5-11 years old).

- 40 x 30 yard area.

- A goal at each end.

- No goalkeepers

Equipment:

- 1 ball with other balls scattered around the outside.

- Bibs (6 blues, 6 reds).

- 2 goals or poles.

- Cones/makers

Description:

- Two teams playing a match with normal football rules.

- The only condition is that if a player scores a goal directly from turning past a defender then 3 goals will be awarded for that.

Progressions:

- Every time a player turns past a defender, scoring a goal or not, that player earns a goal foe their team.

- Can introduce a height rule. The ball is not allowed to go above waist height which gives the players more opportunities to perform a turn within a game.

- Can let players go back to their teams to come up with different rules and conditions to change the game. Can also discuss different tactics in order to have a positive impact and win the game.

Challenges:

- Can the players challenge themselves depending on how they did in the previous practices?

- How many different types of turns can you perform in the match?

Targets:

- Team goal: can you score 5 goals scored directly from a turn past a defender?

Coaching interventions:

- Fly-by: Give players quick reminders and tips on how to perform the turning technique.

- Drive-by: If certain players are struggling, pull them out to give them a slow motion demonstration on different types of turns they can perform in the area along with a detailed explanation. Allow them to rehearse and then show you at match speed inside the area. Give them praise after signs of improvement. This will also give the other team a numerical advantage for a short period of time so could force the other team to play different tactically.

- Coaching process: this can be used when certain players make a wrong decision or perform the wrong technique when turning. For example, an attacker may turn back into danger rather than turning into space. As a coach you should step in and give feedback to the whole group and demonstrate what the right decision is. Allow the players to role play through the right decision whilst giving the players several different options to go into. Then let them play live once they have the hang of it.
