2 vs 2, 3 vs 2 (20 mins)
Game:
- 2v2 in the playing area. Defenders start next to the goal, Attackers start on the opposite side of the area.
- Phase of play starts when a defender passes the ball to the attackers.
- Attackers aim to score in the goal, defenders aims to stop them. Attackers can't shoot until they have 'beaten' the defenders. Swap roles once they complete that phase of play.
Progression:
Add another attacker to make it a 3v2.
Time:
2v2: 7 min + 1min break
Progression: 7 min + 1min break
Learning outcomes out possession:
- Thought process: can I intercept the pass? no, then can I challenge the first touch? no, then I must contain the attacker.
- Staying compact to not lose the central space but not too compact that the areas available on the far/outside of the defensive 2 is central enough to open up the scoring opportunities
- The 'second' defender is the communicator as they can see much more
Technique out of possession:
- Run to approach much be curved to cut off the central part of the pitch
- Patient defending. We are looking to contain until we see an opportunity to win the ball back, don't commit to early giving the attacker an opportunity to go around.
- When tackling you are aiming to tackle with your front foot.
Progression learning outcomes:
- Cutting off the pass to the defensively weak side using angled approach run
- Directing attackers into the area of defensive support
