Over the Shoulder Training with Colored Bibs and Cones (10 mins)

Player 3 Holds up a "bib" or practice jersey that is either Blue or Red

Player 2 is facing back to player 3

Player 2 looks over his shoulder at player 3 to identify the color of the bib in the air

Player 2 then side shuffles to the cone that matches the color

Player 1 then passes the ball to the correct color

Repeat this for a timed interval or number of reps (in this case we are going to go for 5 minutes)

If player 2 goes to the wrong color cone the pass in withheld, start the drill over and repeat

Never reward the incorrect movement with a pass.

Rotate 1->2->3

Numbered Corner Passing (10 mins)

4 players on the outside of the square at the cones with multiple balls

1 player in the middle of the square

Coach instructs the group that the corners of the square are numbered 1,2,3,4 pointing at the corners

Player in the middle must listen for the coach to call out 2 numbers.

First number is where to recieve a pass from

Second number is where the pass is to go.

Player in the middle must make a quick decission, check to the passer and make a good strong pass to the target.

In the example above the player in the middle will check to corner 1 and pass back to the same corner since the coach called out 1,1

Coaches can call out 1,1 2,2 2,3,1,4 and etc

Coaches schould create patterns to develop a routine in the begining to make is easier on the players and then break the pattern once the player shows competency.

**Progression**

Use numbers and letters for the corners... such as 1 is also A, 2 is also B

Use multiple of the numbers... such as 1 is 1, 4 is 2, 6 is 3 and 8 is 4

The idea is to get players to develop their ability to think quickly under pressure and develop that skill.

So push the players to work quickly

When a player makes a mistake restart the drill, do not allow them to make the pass or recieve a pass from the wrong corner.

Only reward the correct behavior in the drill.

Rotation of Players

1->2->3->4>-middle -> Next drill

Decission Making: Passing with Back to Defender: (10 mins)

Player 1 passes the ball to player 2

Player 2 looks over his shoulder to see where the defender is

If the defender is:

On him, he plays the ball back to player 1

Giving him a cushion, he turns and plays the ball to Player 4

When the ball is played to player 4 then player 3 becomes the reciever and player 2 becomes the defender

** teaching player 2 and 3 to look over their shoulder (like switching lanes on a freeway, in their blindspot) to see where the defensive pressure it.

If the defender is close they need to "play the way they face" use that terminology during practice

If the defender is far away or giving a cushion the player needs to make a quick "turn and face" use that terminology during practice

model how to look over your shoulder with a glance to identify pressure.

As they show competency ask the defender to move side to side (slightly) and the recieving player must turn to the side the defender is not occupying for the "turn and face"

This is an "if than" statement..... If _____ happens than you will do _______
