Energiser - 1v1 - Up the grid!
Organisation
- Pair the players up
- 12 cones or markers
- Make 6 10x10 boxes to create the grid. Add more suit amount of players. 6 grids will suit 12 players. ***Could even create two seperate grids of 6. And then the top two from each grid play against each other.***
Game set up
- In pairs the players face each other diagonally as shown above.
- Blue plays the ball along the ground to Yellow.
- Yellow attacks:
*1 point for dribbling to cone 1 or 2.
*3 points for dribbling to cone 3 - the one behind the Blue player.
- After Yellow attacks - successful or unsuccessful, they serve in to the Blue player. And that repeats until the coach stops.
- The winner moves up the grid or stays where they are if they are already at the top.
- The loser moves down or stays where they are if they are already at the bottom.
It's high intensity so allow between 1 and 2 minutes for each round. Deduct points for time wasting.

Organisation
9 players. If you have more than 9 extra players can queue on the orange cones.
6 cones / markers. 3 of each colour.
How it works
1.Goes around in a sequence
2.Player on the ball passes into the player on the red cone, driving it into feet
3.Player on the red cones take the pace off the pass and sets it back to the original passer
4.Meanwhile the player on the orange cone starts to make his movement off the cone to be in a position to receive the ball from the original passer.
5.Work on movement and communication of player moving off the orange cone. He then plays in to next man on the red cone of the opposition station.
Coaching points
Effectively it's a passing and movement drill with emphasis on:
- Timing of the run
- Timing of the pass
- Quality of the pass
- Comminication - verbal and non verbal
This lays the foundation of the third man running.
You may need to stop it a couple of times to explain until everyone understands.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
How it works
1.As before but this time, the man working off the orange cone on station 3 is finishing with a shot on goal rather than passing in to station 1.
2.After the shot the player joins station 1.
3.Looking for a position first touch from the man shooting and two touches.
Further coaching points
Quality of shot - first touch / hit the target
Have two groups running at the same time and create a competition.

Organisation
- Size - as appropriate - Not full size pitch as shown
- Players - 5 yellow and 4 blues.
- 4 cones to make the two gates
How it works
Purpose is to recreate what we’ve covered in the previous drills and take it in to a more game like scenario.
1.Play starts with the team of 5 playing possession on one half of the pitch for a set amount of passes, i.e. 3 or 5 passes before you can play into the other half.
2.Team in possession is looking to hit the player that is running the line, target man, between the two cones and then you’re looking to receive the ball through one of the two gates.
3.Two ways this can happen. Team with 5 can play into the target man for him to set back and then there is a run forward, just like in the warm up drill. Or it can be played in to target man who receives on the half turn and plays forward immediately.
4.If the opposition win it, they try and score a goal.
Alternative – both teams involved
•Play with two floaters
•One floater is the target man for the team in possession – playing between the gates
•The second floater plays freely with the team in possession. – target man and 4v4. This free’s the target player to support attacks. And the floater takes his place when play comes the other way.
Progressions
Can add more players, for example can be 6v5, 7v6 and so on.
Could add GKs.
Challenge is to play in third man running through the gate. Ball doesn't have to go through the gate but the player does.
Looking for:
Patience in possession
Target man (man in centre circle) to set it back but he can turn to play players in.
Quick play and passing.
Change of direction in play to release runner on other side of pitch.

Third man runs tend to happen in wider areas. This game format supports and encourages these types of runs. Play this before you go in to a full game with no conditions.
Organisation
- Line of cones to create 4 quarters
- 4v4 plus extra man for team in possession.
- Not a full pitch. Play realistically to match number of players.
How it works
Need to touch ball in 2, 3 or 4 of the quarters.
Let them play if they score it’s one goal. Every quarter they play in to on approach to the goal they get an extra point.
For every zone that the team passes into successfully, if they then score from that round of possession, they get an extra points for each zone.
For example, if the team in possession passes into zones 3 and 1 and then scores, they get 3 points.
Or, all 4 zones and a goal is 5 points.
Can add GKs if required.
Play with a neautral player. They are on the side of the team in possession to create the overload. They can go into the wide areas.
Only one player at a time from the team in possession can enter the wide zones.
Coaching points:
- Everything from the earlier drills.
- Decision making:
- Can be used to build up possession and break down teams.
- Or if opposition is stopping play in to wide areas the opportunity to play through may become available.
