Focus - Defending the Final Third - General Practice
Understandwhen and how to minimise space, deal with crosses/shots and protect space centrallyin the defensive third.
Organisation and Layout
Pitch 40m x 30m.
3 'central' sections of pitch all 24m wide with 2 end sections of 17m long and a middle section of 6m long.
2 Channels on either side the pitch running the length of the pitch and being 3m wide.
12 players - 5 yellow and 5 blue set up as in the diagram. 2 red players acting as neutral players in the channels who will always be on the attacking team.
Timings
4 blocks of differing lengths between 3 1/2 to 4 mins with 1 min break in between blocks.
Explanation
Defending Team (Coached)
Force wide
Minimise box entries
Stop crosses
Defend the box
Block 2 (3 1/2 mins)
Repeat the practice with the same conditions stopping play when there is a breakdown of principles by the defenders. Use walk throughs to highlight the issues using the players then restart from the position the players were in before the breakdown occurred.See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Block 3 (4 mins)
Progression
One attacking player can now enter the central area unopposed to encourage the attacking to team to look for central passes more often.
This will test the defending teams ability to force the ball wide by stopping split passes.
Use Terminal interventions to show breakdowns in the principles of Defending the Final Third. It also allows the players to have a break as the workload could be intense.

Block 4 (4 mins)
Progression
When the attacker drops in to the middle section he can now be followed by a defender from the same section as him. A defender in the furthest section can also drop in to the middle section to help defend their goal.
This will encourage the defenders to make decisions regards to who defends the middle section. It also encourages more communication between the defenders.
Again, use terminal interventions to get across coaching points. An example could be if the attacker drops in to the middle section and is followed by the defender marking him. The attacker manages to play the ball to a wide neutral player who could create a 2v1 in the final third. The attacker dropping in to the middle section could mean the defender following wouldn't have to follow the attacker.
