"Empty the Net" Small-Sided Game

Set Up & Theme:

Use a standard small-sided pitch with mini-sized goals at each end.
Divide players into two teams and provide each team with three balls.
Emphasize the game's objective: "Empty the Net." Teams aim to score goals and immediately retrieve the ball from their own net to restart play. The winning team is the one that completely empties their net.
Make Individual by Players have a designated person to restart, giving one player the chance to practice build-up play.

Coaching Points:

Encourage players to initiate attacks from deep positions, replicating real-game scenarios.
Stress the importance of quick reaction and transition after conceding a goal.
Foster communication among teammates to facilitate efficient build-up play and defensive organization.

Progressions:

Progression: Rotate the designated person to restart play, giving multiple players the opportunity to practice build-up play and decision-making under pressure.

Guided Discovery:

Questions to ask players:
- What can you do after scoring a goal?
- If there's no pressure in build-up, what can you do to create opportunities?
- What shape gives our team the best passing options?

Session Plan: "Football Bingo" Small-Sided Game

Set Up:

Field Size: Small-sided pitch with mini goals at each end.
Divide players into two teams.
Place three cones for each team at the side of the pitch.
This is a normal game, with the coach having the flexibility to adapt the bingo for current training themes.

Objective:

Players aim to score using specific methods: right foot, left foot, right volley, left volley.
Once a player scores using one of these methods, they turn the corresponding cone at their team's side of the pitch.

Coaching Points:

Encourage players to think about their passing choices and positioning to create scoring opportunities.
Emphasize teamwork and support as players help each other score and turn the cones.

Guided Discovery:

Questions to ask players:
- How can you communicate effectively to show your teammate where to pass?
- Where can you position yourself to receive better passes and create scoring chances?
- What types of passes are most effective in this game?

By incorporating guided discovery through thoughtful questions, coaches can encourage players to think critically about their actions and decision-making on the field, enhancing their understanding of the game while actively participating in the session.
