FUNctional Activity: Empty the Nest (10 mins)

Session Organization:

20 cones, 17 balls, 8-12 portable poles, 2 sets of bibs/jerseys, 2-4 portable goals.

Grid Size: Size adaptable, but need 4 outside bases and one middle nest (as pictured).

Explanation:

Divide players into 4 even teams and position each team inside a base.

On coach's call, one player from each team will sprint in to the main nest, get one ball only and pass it back to their teammate inside their base.

Passer returns to their base at speed, tagging the next teammate who then collects their ball.

Game continues until all balls have been removed from nest to bases - when time is called the team with most footballs in their base wins.

Progression:

Once the nest is empty, players can rob balls from other team's bases (no defending the bases - every player is taking them). Can also make the rule that players must use left or right foot for the activity.

Evaluation:

Encourage players to face the target when striking the ball.

Praise effort to strike the ball with different parts of the foot.

Encourage players to transfer weight forward when striking the ball.

Recognition Phase: Game (10 mins)

Session Organization:

Equipment as mentioned previously.

Grid Size: Create a game in an area approx 30m x 40m (guide only).

Explanation:

Divide squad into two even teams (6v6 including GK for a squad of 12).

Teams play normal game rules for the first 5 minutes.

To maximise game time, goalkeepers serve the balls in from either goal to start/restart play.

Scoring System:

Regular rules for first 5 minutes, all goals worth 1 point.

After 5 minutes, reward 3 points for a goal scored by any team after completing 5 passes. This incentive maximises passing practice attempts.

Any other goal scored is worth 1 point to allow freedom of expression.

Progression:

Reduce/increase number of passes needed for bonus points.

Neutral players for attacking team (1 or 2).

Create two games of 3v3 including GKs for a squad of 12.

Evaluation:

Encourage players to face the target when striking the ball.

Praise efforts to strike the ball with different parts of the foot.

Encourage players to transfer weight forward when striking the ball.

Intervention: Skill Breakdown (Attacking) (10 mins)

Session Organization:

Equipment as previously listed.

Grid Size: Create two 10m x 10m grids (guide)

Explanation:

Split 6 players into either a 4v2 setup (as displayed) or into 3 different coloured pairs.

Game starts with group outside the grid (Blue in this case) and the Red group inside the grid.

Blue team can only move along their line, while inside pair can move freely inside grid.

Outside players (Blue) combine with each other to get as many passes as possible, while the pair of defenders (Red) will try to win the ball by intercepting passes or forcing mistakes.

Scoring System:

Attackers: 2 points for 10 consecutive passes with outside players (guide only).

Defenders: 1 point for intercepting a pass or forcing a mistake.

Progression:

Swap role of defenders (i.e. use bibs for quick transition) after winning the ball twice or set a time limit (guide).

Evaluation:

Pre-Action: Can you face the target? Can you keep your head up to see your opponents?

Action: Are you able to position your body square to the target?

Post-Action: Can you transfer your weight forward?

Key Coaching Words:

Face Forward, Scan, Follow Through.

Intervention: Skill Breakdown (Defending) (10 mins)

Session Organization:

As mentioned previously.

Grid Size: Exact same setup as previous skill intervention - this is just a defensively focused extension of that.

Explanation:

Same as before, except this time the defenders need to win the ball and dribble over any line for a bonus point. Outside players are allowed to stop defenders from reaching the line, as per the diagram.

Scoring System:

Defenders: 2 points for winning ball and dribbling over a line, 1 point for interception or forcing mistake.

Attackers: 1 point for 10 consecutive passes around the outside of the grid.

Progression:

Rotations for defenders after winning ball twice or set a time limit.

Evaluation:

Pre-Action: Can nearest defender apply immediate pressure on ball carrier? Can second defender cover space behind?

Action: Can nearest defender win the ball when a heavy touch is taken? Can second defender block a line to the next target?

Post Action: Are you able to counter-attack with speed?

Key Coaching Words:

Press, Cover, Block, Fast-break.

Application: Mini Games (20 mins)

Session Organization:

Equipment as mentioned previously.

Grid: Create 3 grids 15m x 20m with a goal at one end and two side goals on the other end (poles).

Explanation:

Split players into groups of 4 (2 attackers, 1 defender and 1 GK).

An attacker (Blue) starts the play by passing to a teammate.

As first pass is played, the defender (Red) can move up from starting position to apply pressure.

Attackers aim to combine and score past goalkeeper, if defender wins the ball they can score in either of the two gates at the opposite end.

Scoring System:

1 point for a goal & 1 point for GK per save made.

2 points for a goal scored after 3 combination passes in the build up.

3 points for a defender winning the ball and scoring between the opposite end gates.

Progression:

Can go to 3v1 duels or 2v2 duels. Attackers and defenders can start from different angles/distances.

Evaluation:

Key Coaching Comments:

Attackers: Face Forward, Scan, Follow Through.

Defenders: Press, Cover, Block, Fast-break.

Teams to follow normal football rules, all goals worth 1 point.

To maximise game time, GKs can start/restart play with football from either end (place balls near goal).

Add one or two floaters to help attacking team in possesion.

Evaluation:
