Description

First, this session begins as all do , with a full warm-up:

Technical, Dynamic, and another Opposed Technical Possession activity.

Normally, we do not cover defending and attacking in the same session. However, the session the night before was interrupted with a player getting injured and I was unable to cover all of the defending points and activities I needed to.

Therefore, the topic is 2 fold: small-group defending to prevent penetration (at a line of confrontation) and ball retention/switching play

4v4 to 4 goals (20 mins)

-25x30 yard grid

-8 players per team; 4 in and 4 outside who act as support players (1-tough only) for their teams only

Objective: defending team is trying to prevent passes between them/split passes.

Focus: defending principles - pressure, support, cover/balance.

-defenders not encouraged to win the ball unless the opportunity presents itself; patience, don't dive-in

-this is part to encourage the use of a line of confrontation in the 11-aside game.

Progression: put the offside rule into effect.

North/South vs East/West switching point of attack (20 mins)

-40x40 yard grid

-equal teams; in this case 6v6 inside with 2 players outside at opposite ends of the grid.

-this is directional, so one team is playing North/South and the other East/West.

Objective: play to a teammate on the outside, that teammate can either play back into the grid to one of his other teammates on 1-touch and switch with the initial passer;

OR - another teammate drops outside the grid away from the player on that side (preferably behind the ball slightly) and the play is switched on no more than 2-touches.

Focus: attacking principles of dispersal, support, mobility and interchange, penetration and surprise.

-this activity is to encourage ball retention and side-to-side movement of the ball to either penetrate on a reverse/counter/diagonal pass, or change the point of attack.

-small sided game

-using almost entire half of field with portable goal
