Topic 2: Creating Triangles (Team Based Session)

  • Objective 1: Can we look to create a triangle shape when a player has the ball, giving them at least two passing options
  • Objective 2: Being comfortable under pressure by evading the pressure or passing to a nearby teammate
  • Objective 3: From our triangular shape can we recognise when we can play forward into space, and can we get runners from a deeper position

Arrival Activity as players arrive at the session

 

Playing 1v1 against an opponent, must score within the final third, if you score you must go back to the middle third before pressing, no goalkeeping

 

Multiple games happening simultaneously

 

Play to 3 and then swap over who they are playing against

3v1 (20 mins)

The players that are not playing will be working on their shooting/ball striking with the another coach and then will rotate teams

 



Organisation:

 

  • Within this 2x2 grid, 3 players look to retain the ball in possession whilst the defender looks to stop them from doing so
  • When the defender wins the ball they look to score in one of the two goals
  • The players in possession should look to move into the free square when they have passed the ball
  • Rotate defenders
Progression:

  • Number themselves 1-3. Doing the same as above, 1 passes to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 1, etc (can do it backwards as well
  • 6 passes is worth a goal for the team in possession

Coaching Points:

  • In this practice, some of the key bits we are looking for is passing technique/quality, movement/positioning, communication and speed of play

  • Passing technique/quality:
    • Encourage players to play different types of passes: bounce pass, reverse pass, outside of the boot, chipped pass, set back pass (core move)
    • Using both feet to receive and turn (that can be a challenge as well)
    • Passing speed to allow the player to turn or bounce the pass
    • What foot the player is passing to 
    • Movement/Positioning:
    • Trying to create triangular shape whilst in possession - looking at the Set Back Pass core move (and if players get the grasp of that then potentially up back and through)
    • Moving as soon as a player has passed the ball
    • Timing of movement
    • Body shape to receive
    • Communication

    • Players asking for the ball

    • Using names
    • Receiving player telling the passing player which foot they want to receive on
    • Use of hand signals

Organisation

 

  • For each team 3 out of the 4 players are restricted to their third
  • One player in each team is allowed everywhere (rotate this player)
  • Normal game otherwise
Progressions

  • Number of passes in a sequence is equal to the number of points a goal is worth
  • Eventually allow players to move wherever they like
Coaching Points:
